Coach W. R. (“Monkey") Prite
stated today that basketball prac
tice for the boys team at the local
high school would start this week
A number of boys from the rural
sections are planning to join the
squad this year and will help out
considerably.
The loss of Solomon Blatt, Jr
and Arden Lemon, who graduated
last spring from the local school,
will be felt by the local coach, but
most of last year’s team members
will be back. Last year was the
first year that the local boys
had had a cage team and the rec
ord piled up was not so impressive,
but Coach Price states that he will
have a much improved team this
winter. Roscoe Still, Tommy Rich
ardson, Harry Lee O’Bannon, John
B. Cook, "Sonny” Patterson, and
a number of others will be out for
the squad. All but one of the boys
named have had previous experi
ence and should be greatly im
proved this year.
The coaching of the team will be
handled by Coach Price this year,
Roy E. Hewey, who handled this
assignment last year having left
the school and gone to Greenville
high. The girls have been at work
for some time under the direction
of Miss Margaret Ellis. They
number among their squad mem
bers a good many of last year’s
regulars and are planning to make
a race for district title honors.
Coach Price also stated that he
hoped to get boxing practice start
ed by the week before the Christ
mas holidays. This sport will be un
der the direction of J. U. "Red"
Watts, Jr., local attorney and for
mer member of the University of
South Carolina boxing squad. Coach
Watts has made boxing one of the
most popular sports in Barnwell
during the two years that he has
directed the ring teams here and
his teams have made quite an en
viable record. Solomon Blatt, Jr.,
Warren Calhoun and Thomas Boul-
ware were lost from the squad but
there are still enough veterans left
frem last year to build the team
around. These three men will be
missed, however, and it is hoped
that replacements will turn up
to fill their shoes so that Barnwell
can have a better season than last
year.
A. W. KNIGHT.
Bamberg, Nov. 29.—Archilles
Wilkes Knight, 69, prominent news
paper and business man, died at his
lome about noon today, following
a stroke of paralysis late yesterday
afternoon. He had apparently
>een well, but complained of numb
ness in his left arm and soon af
terwards fell in his home.
Funeral services will be held
Tuesday afternoon at four o’clock
at Trinity Methodist Church, with
interment following in the family
>lot in South Elm cemetery.
Mr. Knight, who was born at
lennettsville, was well known in
newspaper circles, having been con
nected with several papers in the
State. He purchased The Bam-
>erg Herald in 1899, which paper
le owned at the time of his death,
lowever, he retired from active
newspaper work in 1913, when he
was appointed postmaster at Bam
berg by President Taft. He was
reappointed by President Wilson
and served for nearly 12 years. He
was public spirited and very active
in civic life, and leaves hundreds of
rienda who mourn his passing.

GIVES DEMONSTRATION
AT BAJINWELL MARKET
Miss Myra Reagan, Extension
Nutritionist of Winthrop College,
visited the Barnwell Club Market
on Wednesday morning at the reg
ular mid-week salesday to give
a demonstration of the proper way
to make butter and cottage cheese.
This demonstration was held im
mediately following the regular
market hour and a large number
of the market women were on hand
for the demonstration.
Miss Elizabeth McNab, Barnwell
County Home Demonstration
Agent, is striving to improve the
grade of products offered for sale
on the local market in every possi
ble manner and this is one of the
most important matters that has
been taken up recently—the proper
handling of milk and its by-pro
ducts. A discussion was given on
the handling of milk in connection
with the butter making demonstra
tion.
The Ideal market has advanced
rapidly, particularly in the past
few years, and now every woman
who trades with the farm women
is assured that the vegetables,
eggs, milk, etc., that they purchase
are fresh and as high a grade of
quality as can be produced. The
improvements on the local market
are numerous and the local house
wives have shown their apprecia
tion by purchasing a large part of
their produce from these farm wo
men.
The new quarters for the market,
which were recently occupied and
are located in the old town hall
building which has been remodeled
since it was partially destroyed by
fire last winter, have brought forth
many complimentary remarks and
the local club women and house
wives believe that Barnwell has the
best market of its kind in any little
town in the State.
The many Barnwell County
friends of Mrs. Tommy Nimmer, of
Thomasville, Ga., will be glad to
learn that she is improving after a
major operation about ten days
ago.
