A northern paper of larjre circu lation recently published a story creditinit Senator Guffey of Penn- ayhrania with a larire share of the aictary of President Roosevelt at the polls last November. This ar ticle made much ado about the between Senator Guffey Jahn L. Lewi, and undertakes to prove that Senator Guffey de- mrvrm thanks for inducing John I. Le-ww to support Mr Roosevelt and that Senator «,affey waa a so the gea ua who showed how to per- -*■- the nrgT'jea to airport Mr Well, well! So that a the way inwry and he w.U not get a Then he will have to 4 charity or a government In this great country of oum. with over seven million people un- more than seven million people un employed, doe* it not seem it it more necessary to put everybody to work than to set a certain stand ard of wages which must leave many out of work? I am engaged in fanning. If I were compelled to pay my colored ‘‘hands” $2.00 a day could I do that and produce cotton under boll weevil condi tions and sell it for 12 cents? I should have to decide whether to farm with machinery or quit farm ing. If I farm with machinery I should put my hands out of work and drive them from the land of their childhood. I would also de prive the towns of a great deal of business, for the colored “hands’ spend their money freely in the stores. It must be perfectly obvi ous that the fewer pr^ple em ployed, the $?ss money wfll be spent on the buses, on the railroads, for automobiles and for a thousand and one things. The eleven men who went to Washington presented the whole business picture of South Carolina. In the various conferences which they had they came to a realisa tion that the business peopr of the Slate should stand together be cause everybody with whom they deal is organised Year after year the legislature of the Stale aal the Catfvreee a€ the United Bute* ether y«aa «r try U pass, all sorte •f laws that hamper and haaa g a See e« ahull a I an#ec La W* as «ges aed s*4 as laatatly • >4 fee ee psf S*d Swttee I i wdhd£ * a*ehsd twf 9 *% I® W® I » aka* sad <ar*ai a j ••Cf f«e • sas* h 1 a• •« sa*s ss «aae e*e ety w ha*e S sae-eay a • * • s ihs ate a i ••• s»e* a ■ «su* la « sa«s *. esy* eWe as r*a* • Sat I *aa.-e aase >*' »ada - a- - aa teas* es 41 a a ha* ef IhMiw L Hi I.
