Davies, Sr., en tertained several members of the Ace of Clubs at their home on Main Street on Saturday evening. Calhoun, of Bamberg, apent Saturday afternoon and night in Barnwell with hia brother, L. M. Calhoun, and apent Sunday in Allen dale with hia brother, M. B Calhoun. Misses Fauline, Eloise and LaBelle Norris, of the Snelling section visited their sister. Miss Benjamin Norris, Jr, who is in a Columbia hospital, Sunday. Miss Norris is improving nicely. F. M. Norris and family and Mrs. Minnie Bounds returned to their home in Mooresville, N. C., Sunday, after paying a brief viait to their nieces, Minses LaBelle, Fauline and Eloise Norris, at Snelling. Judge John K. Snelling returned home Thursday afternoon from Myr tle Beach, where he visited his son, Thos. E. Snelling, and family, who have a cottage there in which they are spending their vacation. The judge was accompanied home by his grand daughter, Miss Helen Frances Snel ling, of Columbia, who will spend some time here. Wo. ocie LITTLE GIRL CELEBRATES SIXTH BIRTHDAY. Mrs. Jack Waltz entertained about fifty little boys and grils with a birth day party at her home on Friday af ternoon honoring her daughter, Jean- nett Waltz, who reached her sixth birtday on that date. A number of games and contests were enjoyed by the children with prizes being award ed the winners. The members of the Wednesday Af ternoon Contract Club were entertain ed last week by Mrs. Charlie Brown, Jr., at her home. After several rounds of cards had been enjoyed it was found) that the high score prize for club members, handkerchiefs, had been won by Mrs. E. J. DaCosta, and the consolation prize for club mem bers, a box of stationery, had been cut by Mrs. Solomon V. Brown. The guest prize, handkerchiefs, was award ed Mrs. J. P. Scoville. After cards had been laid aside for the afternoon the hostess served a sweet course for refreshments. Those who enjoyed Mrs. Brown’s hospitality, other than chib members, included Miss Grace Milford, of Abbeville, Mrs. J. P. Sco ville, Mrs. Ira Fales and Mrs. Morde- cai Mazursky. JUNIOR-SMART SET BRIDGE CLUB. Miss Rosalie Spann was hostess to the members of the Junior-Smart Set Bridge Club at the home of Mrs. Perry A. Price on Marlboro Street on Thurs day afternoon. The high score prize for club members, a deck of cards, was awarded Mrs. Perry A. Price and the consolation prize for club members, al so cards, was cut by Mrs. Calhoun Lemon. The high score prize for guests, a box of powder, was won by Mrs. W. H. Lacey and the consolation prize for guests, a deck of cards, was| cut by Mrs. Spencer Walker, of Al lendale. After several rounds of cards had been enjoyed the hostess served refreshments consisting of a delicious salad course with iced tea. Bates Hagood and Miss Eilsabeth Hagood. Circle Na. Twa Meets. Circle No. 2 of the Barnwell Baptist Church held its regular monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. J. U. Jonas on Thursday afternoon. After the lesson had been discussed s social hour was enjoyed during which the hostess served delicious refreshments. Hill Family Sunday marked the meeting to gether for the first time in about 12 years of the members of the family of Mrs. Ida Hill, and the late James J. Hill, of Snelling, when a family re union was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. D. Creighton, Jr. Mrs. Creighton is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hill, and! her mother, Mrs. Ids Hill, has made her home with her daughter for a number of yean. There are seven daughten in this family, all married and living in various States of the union, and this coming together was a very happy occasion. . At the noon hour a delicious bar becue dinner, with all the trimmings, was served. The following were present on this happy occasion: Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Smith, of Fort, Mott; Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Hill and children, Thomas, Mar jorie and Johnson, Jr., Mrs. Ida Hill, of Snelling, and Mr. and Mn. T. D. Creighton Sr., of Barnwell. Miss Black Improves. The many friends of Miss Catherine Black, who has been critically ill at the Columbia Hospital for the past couple of weeks, will be delighted to know that her condition has shown some improvement in the past few days and it is hoped that she will soon be well enough to return to her home here. Commissioner John Nates, head of the State department of labor, was in Barnwell Monday afternoon check ing up on a protest published in Sun day’s issue of The State to the effect that certain salespeople in this city were being required to work extremely long houn. The protest was address ed) to the editor of the Columbia news paper and signed “Fairplay.” . Mr. Nates and one of his assistants were seen to visit a number of retail es tablishments here, but the result of their investigation is not known., Circle No. 4 Meets. :♦ :♦ The members of Circle No. 4 of the local Methodist Ladies Missionary So ciety were entertained by Mrs. J. Harley, Jr., teacher of the Circle, leading the discussion.
