•orn kT. itJLf raamT REAL SUMMI DANG1 Cbsnty Afvnt H. G. Boyteton «c*>n waa Barnwell County poultry frow- «n that during warm weather hen* ■say become infaatod with lice and hen houae mites in a short time and that these parasites may not be notic ed until egg production drops. A further bad effect, he says, is that pullets may be stunted in growth and some may be lost before the flock owner discovers the cause of the trouble. The most effective summer treat- meant for lice, Mr. Boylston says, is dipping the birds in sodii^n fluoride solution made of one pound of sodium fluoride and 10 gallons of water. The sodium fluoride may be dusted on the hens by the pinch method, which consists of applying a pinch of the dual nnder each wing, the neck, the back and the fluff. To get rid of mites the county agent advises cleaning the poultry house thoroughly ana spraying with • five per cent, solution of some good disinfectant. He suggests that old motor oil alone or with kerosene may be used for painting the roosts and nearby cracks and crevices. For details regarding these parasites and other poultry troubles Mr. Boyls- tou suggests that poultrymen should aerure Extension Circular 147, Poul try Sanitation and Health, which may be obtained through the ounty agent’s office or direct from the Publication Department at Clemson College.
