Exhibits by the NY A workers, un
der the supervision of Mrs. B. W.
Sexton, and the members of the Adult
Training Schools, under the super
vision cf Mrs. Margaret S. Hogg,
were held in the new Boulware build
ing on Main Street during the last
three days of the pest week. Num
bers of interested Bamweil County
people took advantage of these ex
hibits to see the work which is being
done by these two government agen
cies.
Mrs. Hogg had as her exhibit the
one used in the county exhibit held
recently in Columbia. This exhibit
gave a historical sketch of Bamweil
County and also showed what pro
ducts are raised here.
In Columbia, there were four honor
counties—Kershaw, Barnwell, Allen
dale *nd Florence. Barnwell and Al-
lemtoe Counties are under the super
vision of Mrs. Hogg, so her workers
took half of the honorable mention In
the State exhibit

sodation Stages Affair at
Snelling Saturday.
At the Seven Pines School at
Snelling, several hundred guests en
joyed on Saturday the annual barbe
cue put on by the Bamweil County
Fire Protective Association, under the
supervision of Ranger M. F. Ussery.
This affair, which has become an an
nual outing, is looked forward to by
the members of the fire crews and
their friends and Saturday’s affair
was thoroughly enjoyed by those
present.
The day’s festivities opened with
a welcome addresa by J. U. Watts,
Jr., Esq., at 9:30 a. m. Following
Mr. Watta was W. E. Stitt, of Aiken,
District Forester, who gave a talk on
the work done by the local organisa
tion during the past year. This yaar’s
organisation, which was a full bodied
one, replacing the skeleton outfit of
last year, made a big reduction ia the
number of acres burned by forest

Last Confederate
Survivor Honored
Members of Joahsou Hagood Chapter,
U. D. C„ Visit Capt B. M.
Jenkins, Sr. ^
In the little town of Klina resides
the lest survivor of the War Between
the States in Barnwell County, Capt.
Basil M. Jenkins, Sr., who was born
March 24, 1847, now in his 91st year.
He entered the service on November
1, 1864, then being in his 17th yesr.
He served under Captain Lamotte un
til June, 1865. He was taken ill at
Chester, S. C., with typhoid fever,
followed by pneumonia. He remained
there for about three months when
he started on his homeward march.
He was about a month reaching home,
sleeping by the roadside at night on
the ground, getting food when and
where he could. Sherman having
burned the homes along the way, ha
found it difficult to get to me ting to
•at. He was accompanied on his
homeward march by Darling Lancaster
and the Rev. Mack Brabham. David
Ric* and Bill Rice, of Springtowa,
were also with kim on this trip.

Blackville, June 12.—George Ar
thur Baxter, 65, died suddenly at his
home here Thursday morning. He
suffered a heart attack Wednesday
from which he rallied, but another at
tack, occurring Thursday morning,
proved fatal
Mr. Baxter and his wife came to
Blackville from Columbia about a
year and a half ago, being transferred

County Receives Bute Aid.
Barnwell County has been allocated
84,029 in State aid for the transporta
tion of pupils to and from school dur-
ing the 1936-37 session, according to
an announcement from the office of
James H. Hope, superintendent of
education. The total allocation to all
counties was $234,000, of which Allen
dale received $2,907; Bemberg, $3,-
240, and Hampton, $4,905.

to be keen. However, the entries

community or county, but are open
to any fiddler anywhere who can pass
the age requirements. There will be
two cash awards made to the winning
contestants.
A basket picnic lunch will be held
at one-thirty p. m., and everybody is
cordially invited to bring a basket and 1
join in the fun of a regular old-fash
ioned picnic.
At 4:30 p. m., a baseball game will
be staged on the local ball diamond
with 1C team representing the fats
and one represents \ the leans battl
ing it out
The day’s festivities will be wound
up with a square dance, one of the
old-fashioned variety which has
I gained such popularity with young
and old alike in Barnwell * during
the past few months. The dance will
be held in the Fuller Park pavillion
with music furnished by a string
band. For those devotees of the old-
fashioned square dance, this will af
ford another opportunity to enjoy

but the buyers are predicting a heavy

The market here this year, which
is functioning for the first time under
the town-sponsored auction block, has

have toip grade stuff got little or
nothing for it.

Fenner’s Wife Magazine and was in
turn published in the news letter.
The State club leader of e far-away
State, reading the news letter wrote
the home agent requesting a booklet
on scrapbooks. The request spurred
the club girls of Barnwell County on
to “make the best better” and a* a re
sult they exhibited some creditable
scrapbooks on Achievement Day. The
blue ribbon from the county received 1
also a blue ribbon in the State 4-H
contest at Winthrop College during
the Short Course held recently. An
exhibit of scrapbooks from Barnwell
County is being sent the dub agent
in answer to her request for sugges
tions.
