Two Barnwell Youths
Have Narrow Escape
Rodm«n Lemon and McTyrc Calhoun
Injured in Automobile Accident
Near Swansea.
Rodman Lemon, son of Mr. and
Mrs. W. J. Lemon, and McTyre Col-
houn, son of |L. M. Calhoun, both of
Barnwell, narrowly escaped serious in
jury about one mile south of Swan
sea on Thursday afternoon of last
week, when their car skiddted and hit
the guard rail of a bridge on the high
way at that point. Both young men
are members of the graduating class
at Clemson College and were spend
ing several days at their homes here
prior to receiving their diplomas this
week.
Lemon escaped with a slight head
injury and minor scratches and bruis
es. Calhoun was more seriously in
jured, a gash in his leg necessitating
a couple of stitches to close the wound
and other minor bruises.
The young men were headed toward
Columbia from Barnwell when the car
suddenly skidded on the pavement,

and Allendale Counties, the workers
of the United States public health ser
vice have done much toward the
eradication of ^he anopheles or ma
laria mosquito in this section.
For several months one of the pro
jects in the two counties has been the
draining c^f ditches and other palces
where stagnant water might provide
breeding places for the mosquito. The
ditches have been graded so that
they will drain prbperly and low
places have been filled in so that
there will be no pooling of water to
stagnate
This section of South Carolina has
for years been a prime spot for the
malaria mospuito and it has caused
many cases of the dreaded disease

The South Carolina mapping con
tract was let to Standard Aerial Sur
veys, Inc., of Kensack, N. J. The
price per square mile is approximately
16.16. The South Carolina counties
are included with a number of Geor
gia counties in the contract let to
Standard Surveys, which totaled *60,-
866.96. , i
The aerial maps will be used in the
determination of preference by farm
ers who take part in the agricultural
conservation program. According to
AAA officials, aerial mapping has
been demonstrated aa a relatively
cheaper and improved method of tar
rying out this function.
Cotton Carry-over
Park, Mayor C. G. Fuller stated that
he, personally, and the town council
aa a whole, heartily endorsed the
plana and would be glad to lend any
and every assistance toward the com
pletion of the project A number of
local people are interested in the
beautification of the park and many
suggestions have been offered.
Fuller Park, including the baseball
park, the tennis courts and the swim
ming pool, is on the western ed|ge of
Barnwell, directly on the highway
from Augusta and interested persons
have advanced the idee with a view of
making the first appearance of Ban-
well to the travelers from that sec
tion a little more Inspiring.

Mrs. G. M. Greene attended an im
portant meeting of the State Execu
tive committee of the Crippled Chil
dren’s Society for South Carolina,
held at the Hotel Columbia on Monday
Reports were heard from the presi
dent, W. M. Perry, Dr. Samuel R.
Shillman, executive secretary, and
Mrs. Paul H. Leonard, director divis
ion of Crippled Children Department,
State Board of Health, all of whom
had just returned from the Milwaukee
convention. Mr. Perry responded to
the address of welcome by Geo. R.
Howitt, of Milwaukee, while Dr. Shill
man had a place on Sunday’s program
on Spiritual Values in Rehabilitating
the Crippled Child. Mrs. Leonard

se* by June 30th, will be subject to
prosecution under the State’s motor
vehicle laws.
Applicants for new or re-newal
licenses are urged to mail their filled
out blanks immediately, Remittances
should be by Post Office Money Orders
or Cashier’s checks. The Highway
Department cannot be responsible for
cash. Officials of the motor vehicle
division are directing attention to a
major change in the application
blanks. This time, it is required that
the applicant give his or her full
name. Initials are not sufficient, as
it has been found this results in many
names and initials that are identical.
