V *1 THE BARNWELL PEOPLE-SENTINEL. BARNWELL. SOUTH CAROLINA THURSDAY. APRIL 29TH, 1937 Solon* Are Seeking Final Adjournment InpatVnce for Hrat Time Is Shown Ay Lawmakers in Session During Past Week. Columbia, April 24.—The first signs •f impatience for early sine die ad journment appeared in the general as sembly this week but they were not universally shared. The lawmakers agreed to return to wrork Monday night, however, in an «ffort for adjournment by next week end, although many observers saw no chance for it. Although strong adjournment sen timent was noted in the senate, it met little response in the house. The former body adopted a resolu tion to meet day and night except Sunday in order to bring adjournment by April 30th, but this move, with similar ones, met objection from rep resentatives and did not get considera tion. It was only at the last minute Fri day that the house notified the senate it would meet Monday night. Senator Brown was a strong advo cate of bringing the session, in pro gress since January 12, to a close. He said he was “in a hurry” and "it’s time somebody raised a ruckus about adjournment.” Conferees Hurry. Brown asserted only the general ap propriation, Social Security and de ficiency appropriation bills remained to be passed and these could be finish ed by Thursday or Friday.” The free conferences on the general appropriation and Social Security measures meanwhile completed their work of redrafting these important bills and were expected to report them out Monday night or Tuesday. If they meet the approval of both houses, adjournment probably would be only a matter of hours, but ob stacles to immediate passage were believed sure to ariae. The senate also went on record agaiast extra pay with adoption of a resolution opposing Uie voting of any "expense” money. An extra pay bill introduced by Rep. Britt, of York, was still pending in the house. Senator Thurmond, one of the au thors of the senate resolution, aaid it would “aid more than any one thing in bringing the general assembly to a For Sale! 2 Mule Grain Binders. The "fair trade" act and acta to regulate the practice of optometry and to increase the minimum age un der the child labor law from 14 to 16 ronstitutrcT the week’s chief legisla tion. The “fair trade” measure prohibits jsu e of trademarked products at leas than the wholesale price. The op tometry act outlaws “petkiling” of rye- glawes and bans “misleading" adver tisements Although the house failed to act on the ao-called “mechanical” highway ^atetj bill and on consideration of the gavemor’s veto of the bill to create a board of boiler rules, it sent to the senate the hotly contested bill to regu late the sale of used cars. A bill providing for the State to assume Georgetown County’s indebt edness on the Lafayette bridge across the Black, Peedee and Wacamaw rivers and free it of tolls passed both booses but it continued 1 to shuttle back and forth with amendments. Another free conference in addition to the several already at work was necessitated during the week when the senate refused to concur in a house amendment of the bill author- tting the commission of labor to arbi trate industrial disputes. vCounty Education Association, v -- ■ The members of the Barnwell Pub lic schools faculty were hosts to the last meeting of the Barnwell County Education Association and several of the members of the State Department of Education at a catfish stew served at Fuller Park ori Friday afternoon.
