AGRICULTURAL NOTES
(CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE.)
Crop Production.
A. There must be a sufficient avail-
«ble plant-food in the soil to promote
•sufficient growth to prove worth
while.
B. A suitable physical structure of
the soil. This physical structure of a
•soil is fjoverned to a large extent by
texture or fineness of the soil parti
cles and by the arrangement of these
.same soil particles. This soil struc
ture can be, to a large extent, con
trolled by (1) proper plowing and
cultivation. (2) The amount of de-
cayinp organic or
remains. (3) Draininge. (4) Root
grawth. (5) Soluble salts which
make or provide the necessary plant
foods. This physical condition should
provide:
1. A mellowness and firmness,
which permit the proper root develop
ment. This providing of a firm soil
structure upon the sand soils of Barn
well County is rather difficult.
2. A soil which enables the soil to
receive water easily, distribute in
uniformity, hold this water with suf
ficient tenacity, yet give it up as the
plants need it.
3. Provide sufficient passage of soil
oxygen, yet not allew the passage of
too much heat which burns up the or
ganic matter.
(C) The presence, o fthose beneficial
micro-organisms which promote the
decomposition of plants and animal
matter. ' »
(D) The absence of those sub-
ces which injures the plant, such sub
stances which injure plant, such sub
organic compounds.
3. There are several special condi
tions which affect the extent to which
«reps are influenced by plant foods.
These facts are more or less controla-
ble and are therefore of special im
portance. These conditions are:—
1. Soil orgattK matte:. 2. Soil
rndity. ,1. 9»o structure. 4. Soil
moisture.
As preliminary step* in selecting
and ascertaining the fertiliser prac
tices are: — 1st. Extent of organic
matter 2nd. Proper drainage. 3rd.
I.lining. 4th. Improved tillage im
plements tnd method* These farts
may be summanied aa follows:
I. To utilise the slowly available
plant foods 2. To make these plant
foods gradually available during the
entire growing seasons
