*AGB FOUl. THE BARNWELL PBOPLE-8ENTINEL, BARNWELL, SOUTH CAROLINA THUtt^OAt, MARCH 25, 1937. Th* Barnwell Paople-ggntine JOHN W. HOLM! 1S4A—1912. B. P. DAVIES, Editor and Proprifr. Entered at the poet office at Barnwell, S. C., as second-class matter. SUBSCRIPTION RATES: One Year H-W Six Months Three Months — AO (Strictly In Adrance.) THURSDAY, MARCH 25, 1937. Triple “C” News Notes I W. TEAL, Reporter. The truck trail from Ashleigh to Double Ponds, near the Bamberg County line has been completed by this camp and turned over to the EC^ authorities in Columbia. W. H. McLees, ECW Inspector for this State, was here Friday, March 19, and sign ed the cards signifying the road was completed, after going over it with F. P. Cuthbert, project superintend ent of this camp. This trail is about six miles long. It is typical of the work that has been done in this county and other counties by the CCC men, but is in a more thickly settled part of the coun ty than most of the trails are. For this reason it will be useful to the residents of that section in going back and forth, as well as useful in fighting fires. Some of the trails are useful only in making woods accessi ble to fire fighters, as they run through sections where practically no one lives. This trail will be more like a public road. By the time this is in print, Co. 4468*8 baseball team will have started working out. The diamond is in good shape. We have a few new balls and some new shoes, caps, etc., with which to start the season. We believe that prospects for a winning team this year are much brighter than they were last year, because of having only one side camp at ths time, whereas last year we had two. Many of last year’s players are still here, includ ing pitchers Jessie Martin and J. B. Potter. * “SHELL BLUFF” VISITED BY 4-H CLUB MEMBERS A field trip to “Shell Bluff” in the Boiling Springs community was made recently by a group of 4-H Club mem bers, accompanied by Mias Elizabeth McNab as leader. Members of the Boiling Springs and Barnwell Clubs, wishing to indentify and make friends with sbme of the trees and wild flow, ers, as a hon# practice following the project lesson, "Nature in My Gar den," decided to explore one of the beauty spots of the county. Although a little early in the season for many wild flowers, there were found some beautiful and interesting* specimens. The Purple Trillium or Wake Robin, handhome with. its purplish brown petals, and the delicate flowered Bloodroot, unfurling its leaves and expanding its flowers, were seen in profusion. Other specimens noted were: Wild Ginger, with Its two large heart-shaped leaves and its in teresting, dull colored, bell-shaped flower', Five Finger with its dainty yellow flowers; the ever popular Vio let; Yellow Jessamine, and the Part- ridgeberry which was still clinging to its winter fruit. Trees noted were pine (several species), horsechestnut, sweet hay, sycamore, red cedar, holly, haw, oak (several species), box elder and dogwood. At the end of the hike the dubsters rested awhile in a pine grove near by to eat a light lunch before returning home. Not having had enough exer cise, the energetic youngsters prac ticed all the acrobatic stunts they knew r and frolicked and danced like woodland nymphs. It is hoped that every 4-H member will participate in a nature tour this season and by so doing stimulate in terest in wild life. It is fun to meet new friends while rambling through the woods, but more fun to meet old ones. Those who study wild flowers will learn to love them and appreciate them. Club members enjoying the nature hike were Laurie Ella Gantt, Louise Gantt, Marie Gantt and Caroline Fowke, of the Boiling Springs Club; Martha Ayer Harley and Mildred Ma- haffey, of the Barnwell Club.—Miss Elizabeth McNab, home demonstra tion agnt , James D. Williams. ton, and Arthur Williams, of Mar tina; thrao daughters, Miaa Daisy Wil liams, of Martins; Mrs. J. C. Mullins, of Dunbarton, and Mrs. Joel Muns, of Ellenton, and one sister, Mrs. S. A. Towne, of Aiken. Funeral services were held Sun day afternoon at 6 o’clock at the Pleasant Mountain Baptist Church, with Dr. W. M. Jones and 1 the Rev. J. M. Flowers officiating. Interment followed in the churchyard. C. C. C. Applications. James D. Williams, prominent rmer, died at his home near Meyer’s ill Saturday afternoon after an ex- ided illness.
