Patterson, who purchased the “Old Simms House” several weeks ago, are moving there this week. They are having consider able work done one the house and when completed the place will proba- fcle look like “old times” up there. They are arranging the house for several apartments with modern con- veoiences in each. The grounds ad joining the house will be set in shrub- liery and flowers and MrS. Patterson hopes to have the old historic place a veritable flowers garden by next summer. Barnwell Gets Beer-Wine Tax. Taxes collected during July, Au- and September on beer and wine sold in the State and amounting to $244^>22.40, the largest. sum receiv- •d from this source since the sale of alcoholic beverages became legal sev ers] years ago, have been allocated by the State tax commission to the Varans counties. Total collections during the three months represented an increase of $109,042 over receipts by the com mission from beer and wine in the srme three months of 1935. The State will receive $159,037 of the total col lected and allocated. Cities will re ceive $29,767 and counties $55,717. Of this amount Barnwell County will receive $464; Aiken, $1,868; Allendale, $209; Bamberg, $567; Colleton, $596. Teachers at Home for Christmas. The local school closed Wednesday at noon for the Christmas holidays and the members of the faculty are spending the holidays at their homes as follows: Miss Louise Cope, at Cope; Miss Grace League, at Clinton; Miss Elease Ray at Denmark; Miss Louise McCullough at Greenville; Miss Rhoda Wade, at Lowrey; Miss Margaret Free at Bamberg; Miss Mary China Steven son, at Hartsville; Miss Margaret El lis, in Darlington with relatives; Miss Delma Burgess, at Kingstree; Miss Lillie Mae Jones, at Ridgeland, and Miss Hazel Smith with relatives at York. Court House Offices Close. The People-Sentinel has been re quested to announce that all offices in the Court House will be closed from Christmas Eve until Monday morning, December 28th. “Bob”. Bronson, clerk of court, says that he expects all officials will have recovered from the effects of Christmas by that date. Special Christmas Service. / There will be a special Christmas service at Allen’s;- Chapel Baptist Church Sunday morning, December 27th, at 11 o’clock. The Rev. J. H. Strong will preach and conduct the service. Everybody is invited to at tend. ADVERTISE in The People-Sentinel Informal Reception for Paynes. A lovely informal reception was given Tuesday evening in the Masonic hall by the members of Eau Claire Baptist church. The guests of honor Hvere the paetor of the church, the Rev. L. G. Payne, Mrs. Payne and their three children, Hercules, Geneva and Myia Evelyn, who moved here from Blackville last month. Decorations in red and green, de signed by Miss Elizabeth Lucas, were artistically arranged. At one end of the long hall, red candles on tall stands gleamed against a background of pine trees, grouped around a minia ture white Christmas tree. At the other end of the hall stood a gayly lighted pine. Streamers of red and green crepe paper were gracefully draped overhead, teaching from the enter lights to the decorated windows on each side of the hall^/Clusters of red silver bell-shaped lightes illumi nated this scene of loveliness. At the head of the receiving line stood Mrs. D. B. Boney, president elect of the Woman’s Missionary so ciety. Besides the pastor and his fam ily, others in the receiving line were the heads of the various departments of church activities. Favors of mis tletoe sprigs tied with red ribbon were presented to the guests by little Caro lyn Lucas. The following program, arranged by Mis. G. H. Lucas, was rendered: Piano duet, “Venetian Love Song,” Misses Annie and Marjorie Nongen- zer; vocal solo, “Somewhere a Voice Is Calling,” Marion Horne, accom panied by Miss Mary Gbmpton; violin duet, “Arminta,” Misses Margaret and Martha McLeod, accompanied by Miss Annie Nungenzer; reading, “Yellow Butterflies,” Miss Holbrook; violin solo, “Trees,” Lunsford Duke, accom panied by Miss Annie Nungenzer; violin trio, “Moonlight and Roses” and “Drifting in the Moonlight,” Misses Mary ^nd Sudie Compton and Mrs. Kermit Home; readings, “At a mod ernistic Art Exhibit” and “Between Two Lovers,” Miss Mary Holbrook; vocal solos, ‘Play to Me Gipsy” and “At Peace With the World With You,” Lunsford Duke, with Miss Marjorie Nungenzer accompanist; violin duet, “Love and Flowers,” Misses Margaret and Martha McLeod, accompanied by Miss Annie Nungenzer. A long beautifully decorated table cn which were two large cut-glass punch bowls, was presided over by Misses Sara Spearman, Mary B. Mc- Caa, Elizabeth Birt and Sara Hoff man. Iced cakes and mints were served from silver trays. After the program snd informali ties of the evening, a Urge number of young people expressed their we to Mr. Payne by the enthusiastic ing of favorite songs.
