I fac* near. TV* BARNWELL PB0PLR-SKNT1NKL. BARNWELL. BOUT* CAROLINA THl'RSDAT, NOVRNBFR \l 1M* COMMENTS ON MEN AND NEWS By SPECTATOR. . Horses-Mules Spectators seems to hsve stirred up the political speculators hy suiritesting that Sol Blatt appeared in the lead for the Speakership. The CarQlina Free Press published that—as, indeed, it publishes most of Spectator’s com ments—with prominence. Mr. Adams, the EditoV, is quite willing to offer his readers any idea pr suggestion that seems worthy of consideration, quite apart from his own opinion. Most of our editors do that constantly, by the way. A newspaper thinks first of its readers. It tries to offer a varied intellectual diet. A political organ, on the other hand, is a paper which seeks only to glorify the editor and magnify his importance. Often The State and The Record publish items which are not in harmony with their editorials. Editorials and edi torial policy are entirely distinct. Editorial policy tends to offer every thing of interest hut editorials are the editor’s passage to his readers. Mr. Adams usA* the Spectator arti cles for their own value or interest, as do many other editors. Sol Blatt appears in the lead for Speaker. Mr. Adams is not afraid to use an article which says that. If the Johnston men would build up an organization they might elect the Speaker and control the House. It would appear to lie mathematically possible; but I called attention to what most of us non- political and unemotional observers know, namely, that M’. Blntt is a man of ability, is well liked, has proved a capable presiding officer—and is say ing nothing and sawing wood—lots of wood. 33,106 whites either 65 years old or more, and 22,283 colored persons. Taking 60 per cent, as the basis gives us a total of 27,694 persons to be pen sioned. Leaving out the 694 and us ing 27,000 as the basis, the total ex penditure at $15 a month would a- mpunt to $405,000 a month and four million, eight hundred and sixty thousand dollars a year. Now, ask yourself, Citizen, how can South Carolina raise about five million dollars a year for this? Sonu? people say, “The Federal Government will match it.’’ Well, ponder this: If you are a Ford, Plymouth or Chevro let car owner, would it be good busi ness to put up $10,000 for a Rolls Royce or a Isolda Fiaschini de luxe car because somebody else would put up the other'half? If wisdom sug gested a limit of five thousand dollars for a home, would you think it sensi ble to build a home for fifty thousand dollars, just because some one else would put up one half the cost? Did you ever hear it said,“I don’t want that; it*would be a WHITE ele phant.” Would you want a white ele phant? Well, when I heard that an elephant eats several tons of hay a day I calculated that at the end of about a week my hay would be gone and my wfell dry. Then—what? So you see, l‘m in no condition to ac cept any sort of elephant. Is South Carolina able to accept a white ele phant ? I LEFT OLAR Monday night, November 9th, for Illinois to purchase a carload of HORSES and MULES direct from farmeis. I expect a very fine load of horses and mules and it will pay pros- 'pective buyers to see me before supplying their needs. < A SPECIAL FEATURE FOR The Holidays $5 Oil Croquignole Wave 2 for $5 POWDER PUFF BEAUTY SALON Billie Griffen, Piopr. 207 Seventh St. Augusta, Ga.
