Much is said and written about folks
who live beyond their means nowa
days, but do you remember when a
$6-a-week clerk bought hi s sweetie
an $18 toilet set?
We are told that the tendency in
school these days i s to develop origin
ality in the student rather than
slavish adherence to precedent. Yeah,
we’ve noticed that in the original way
in which many present day pupils
spell, to say nothing of what they do
to the multiplication table.

If you want to know what is going
on in a town get hold of a newspaper
from that town. If you want to know
what kind of a town a town is, get
hold of a newspaper from that town.
If you want to know if a town has
a live, aggressive and progressive
bunch of merchants get hold of a
newspeper from that town. If the
paper is filled with good, well writ
ten advs., you can be sure there is a
live, up to date group of merchants
andyou can be equally sure that there
is a good community and a good
town. Good communities draw good
merchants and good merchants adver
tise.—Exchange.
We certainly hope that the above
yardstick.will not be used in measur
ing Barnwell and some other good
towns in this good section. Once upon
a time there was a g«>od town in
which all of the good meehants adver-1 trie elevators.

the Sympathetic interest and hearty
co-operation of the general public.
Instead of supplementing and boost-

and organizations waving our re

words, perhaps, but our general atti-
titude is “Let the government do it

We wish for the continuation of this
particular project. It fill s a real need

Our Debt to Edison
It is impossible to estimate what
we owe to Edison in dollars and cents.
The whole principle of mas s production
which was the basjg of our rise as
an industrial nation, was made possi
ble by him, and that principle did more
to increase employment than any other
work system. Not only did he found,
or cause to be founded, hundreds of
new enterprises, but those industries
gave rise to the employment of mil-
fion s of men and women.
Perhaps the simplest way of under
standing what we owe to Edison is
to try and imagine the world today
without the benefit if his inventions.
Suppose we took, electric light and
power out of our factories and our
machine shops. Suppose we took it
away from our transportation. We
cannot imagine going back to candles,
oil lamps or gas light. We cannot
imagine homes without power to run
oil heaters, ice boxes, radios, vacuum
cleaner 8 and a hundred other things.
We cannot imagine factorie 8 and ma-
chine shops without power, for with
out it all modern productive processes
would be paralyzed. We cannot im
agine business offices without ma-
ehine 8 such as the typewriter, mimeo
graph, the Ediphone, accounting and
bookkeeping machines and the time
clocks. And remember that none of
the modern, many-stored office build
ings would be possible without elec-
tiaed their good good* in the good
low ns good newspaper. All faii*y
tale* begin with “once upon a time.”

Work Project Commended.
Constructve programs have a way
of enlisting the interest of most peo
ple who know about them.
At the colored school building in
Barnwell, there is being given a six-
weeks practice course of study for
such girls a s could physically qualify.
Out of government funds they are
given one meal a day and paid one
dollar per week. Thi s meal is cooked
and served at the school. Mrs. John
Hogg i s supervisor and Miss Mamie
McNab is her assistant.
Upon special invitation it was re
cently the writer’s pleasure with sev
eral other house-wives to visit this
class one morning for the purpose of
both receiving and imparting helpful
information. 1 ’ We were told in a gen
eral way the aim of their work and
they in turn asked u s for any helpful
suggestions we could offer.
The students wore immaculate white
caps and gowns. They are intelligent,
respectful and eager to learn. Sup
plied with note books and pencils they
are learning in the “doing’’ through
being taught the best methods in
cooking and cleaning, besides being
given in lecture form, lessons in mor
als, dependability, cleanliness, honesty
and much else that enters into the
making of an efficient and desirable
aervant.
Is it worth while for one to know in
engaging “help” that she is not only
trained in many practical ways, but
.a 8 she handles our food or our ehil-
recordmg pictures, but through his |
development of the microphone for
telephone purpose* he wa* able to
produce the first system of the talk
ing pictures. Incidentally, he design
ed and built the first moving picture
studio. «
Apart ftom taking out the first
patent on radio, he devised the first
effective radio tube, which was de
veloped to its present perfection by
others, but anyone who has a radio
in his home should remember that the
power that gives energy to it was de
vised by Edison; that the first method
of collecting and utilizing etheric
wave* was his and' that the first radio
tube was his.
The invention and development of
the phonograph from the earliest form
of recording the voice on the tin foil
and later on wax cylinders, and finally
on the present type of disc, wa s all
due to Edison. It is to him that we
owe the ability to reproduce over and
over again the greatest music of the
masters or our latest popular songs.
It would be possible to draw up a
tremendously long list of inventions
which Edison gave u s outside of the
fields of light, power, transmission,
communication and entertainment. It
is worth remembering alway s that he
first made possible modern production
of cement. He designed and poured
the first cement house. He made pos
sible the building of the great cement
highways which link every part of the
country.
In the field of chemistry only a few
people realize how great a chemist
Ed’ison was, apart from being an elec
trical engineer. We owe to him the
proces s of producing synthetic carbolic
acid and many other chemicals.
It doesn’t matter what we do, or
where we are, the hand of Edison is
alway 8 at our elbow, helping and aid
ing in everything we do, relieving the
drudgery and backbreaking labor which
used to exist.
This is the debt that we owe him.
He wa 8 perhaps the greatest friend
humanity has ever had. The least we
