Mrs. J. A. Porter ha s been confined
to her bed for several days with ma
laria and her friends hope that she
will soon be quite ‘well again. Her
granddaughter, Miss Joe Ann Bauer,
is out again after an attck of the
malady.
G. F.Matthews, who has resided in
Barnwell for the past several months
as manager of the Seminole Store,
left this week for Ocala, Fla., after
the closing of the local branch stw^.
Mr. Matthew 8 made many friends
while here who regretted to see him
leave.
Lieut. Elmer W. Grubbs, who was
recently graduated from the United
S'.fitj.s Military Academy at West
Point, N. Y., is spending a few days
with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B.
Grubbs, before being assigned to ac
tive duty at Fort Screven, near Sa
vannah, Ga.
Mr. and Mrs. B. P. Davies, Jr., who
were married in Denmark on the af
ternoon of June 18th, returned to
Barnwell Sunday afternoon after a
ten-day wedding trip through the
mountains of Western North Carolina.
They have taken an apartment in the
heme of Mrs. William McNab on
Jackson Street.

The Secretary of State last week
issued its charter to the Barnwell
County Fair Association—capital $6,-
U00 and all taken.
There was nearly a jail delivery on
Tuescky night through the surrepti
tious introduction of saws or files. It
was fortunately frustrated.
The boiler house of the Southern
Lumber Company at Dunbarton, which
was burned accifcentaljy about a
month ago, has been rebuilt and its
great up-to-date plant i s .running full
time, with about 150 employes.
. One of the pretty circle oak s that
used tg keep cool the campaign speak
ers is dying of drought, and several
immigrant trees east of the Bank of
Western Carolina have shed nearly
all their leaves. Usually these have
not put off their summer dres s until
the middle of the Fall.
Mr. Cornelius H. Hutto, of George’g
Creek township, presented to us on
Thursday the most perfect Indian ar
rowhead we have ever seen. It was
a formidable weapon in the quest of
game or on the war path. He found
it recently in Goose Pond 1 , a famous
game resort and fish village in old
times. It is now bone dry for the sec
ond time within his recollection, the
first evaporation happening in 1881.

Bates, colored, went, according to his
wife’s statement, to the Southern
dtepot at Barnwell to go toward Allen
dale on the southbound trairy He was
late and in trying to get aboard fell
and had hi s right arm cut off at the
shoulder. He wa s hurried to Colum
bia, where he dfed.

organized by the election of the fol

Calhoun; vice-president, W. L. Gave;
secretary, S. B. Moseley.
