MAY 27, 11886.
Barnwell is to be a money ordter
office the first of July.
During a ten-hour rainfall last
Wednesday night and Thursday morn
ing, a barrel in Mr. T. B. Ander
son’s yard at Dunbarton, away from
any gutter or eaves, and left empty
Wednesday evening, was full of
■water and running over at eight o’-
elocfc Thursclay morning. The barrel
was 29 inches deep .
Died in Williston on the 18th inst.,
of cholera ihfantum, Terrill, son of
Dr. and Mrs. W. C. Smith, aged 14
months. >'
The new Methodist Church at Mil-
lett was dedicated on Sunday. Rev.
R. Herbert Jones, of Aiken, preached
the dedicatory sermon.
Few people would believe how many
person s violate the sancity of a news
paper by hiding out when they are
delinquent. They muy dodge the
journalist down .here, but at
the bar of unbiased justice, when
their names are called, _the shade of
many a poor newspaper man, sub
scription book in hand, will be seen
on the sidle of the prosecution. (Ed.
Note: The genua subscriber has
changed but little in the past half-
century, but perhaps he excuses his
present-day delinquency on the same
grounds that France lightly dismisses
her war debt to Uncle Sam; i. e.,
that R i s all “a tragic misunderstand
ing.”)
The guage of the Port Royal Rail
way was changed yesterday and that
of the Barnwell and S. C. R. W. will
be changed next Tuesday. Prepara
tions for this big work are complete.
It is expected to finish inside of the
day. An average of four hands to
th° mile will do the work.
Mkitway defeated Branchville on the
latter’s diamond on the 18th inst. by
the score of 33 to 10.

Many farmers are complaining thi g
week of the need of rain to bring up
late planted portions of their cotton
crops.
It is a gratifying fact that farm
ers around Barnwell are giving more
attention to stock raising that they
have done in many years.
For a, town of its youthfulness Dun
barton has made signal progress. It
has a live commecrial club and the
Masonic and Pythian Lodges own a
commodSous hall. The citizens take
a lively interest in the meetings of
the Meyer’s Mill Agriculture Club.
Married, on Sunday afternoon at
the home of the bride’s parents, Miss
Elizabeth Collins to Mr. Clarendon
| Black, Jr., the Rev. W. C. Baxley of
ficiating.
Three automobiles well filled with
Georgians spent part of Friday night
in town. They had enjoyed a royal
fishing trip at Yemassee, catching 800
splendid perch which they had' ex
pressed in two barrels to their home
folks at Thomson. (And that, dear
reader, is why members of the finny
tribe are so scarce in low country
streams in this year of grace 1936.)
The State of South Carolina has is
sued a commission bo the Farmers’
Union Warehouse Co., of Barnwell,
to erect a bonded cotton warehouse in
time for the coming crop.
Little Elizabeth, only child of Mr.
and Mrs. L. M. Calhoun, died at their
home in Barnwell on the 17th inst.
and was laid to>est Thursday in the
Episcopal Churchyard. She was only
nine months of age.
Mr. H. C. Williams, a good and
gallant soldier of the Confederacy, de
parted this life on the 16th inst. at
the home'trf his son-in-law, Mr. J. J.
Rountiee, near Milletteville, after a
long illness. He was in the 84th
year of his age.
4-H Club Girls Are

requirements in the clothing project
for the year 1934-35. The require
ments for the year were: To com
plete three article- of clothing: darn
three pairs of hose; keep note book
and record card; take part in Achieve
ment Day program; can not less than
two dozen containers of fiuits and
vegetables; attend at least 6 project
meetings during the year. A score
of 75 must be made before a certifi
cate is awarded and club member is
entitled to attend 4-H '‘amp.

Triple “C” News Notes

Work Around Camp.
Co. 4468 had a very busy and event
ful week, with the 21 new’ boys
still in camp working on several camp
projects. Besides general cleaning
and polishing in many different places
around the camp, they managed to be
gin and complete several new’ im
provements. One of the most impor
tant v?as the infield of the baseball
diamond. Clay was hauled, then
rolled and dragged, and after a
rain or two and a little playing on it,
our diamond is expected to be as fast
as any. A porch, corresponding to
the one on headquarters
on Saltkehatchie -College,
and a few benches to go into it
were made near the front of the
camp, and s ome clay was hauled into
the basketball and tennis court.
This work will have to go n more
slowly from now on, because the new
boys began work in the woods Mon
day. About ten of them are going
to the side camps, at Luray and Stokes.
Stunt Night and Visitors.
On Wednesday evening we pulled
the first of what we hope to make a
new serie s of stunt night programs.
After Mr. Bryaq -talked on Current
Events, I. T. Davis and Fred Mays,
twq of the new boys, led off with a
few songs. Then we had a black
face act which took the better part of
an hour. Sam Ellison and Fowder
Boone werestreet sweepers, and later
Thompson Siegler joined them in the
role of Mandy Johnson.- The audience
wa s in gales of laughter ail the time.
Present for the evening were Cap
tain Hyndman, sub-district inspector,
Mr. Myers, district educational advis
er and Lieut. Harrison, accompanying
the inspector around the«distriet be
fore being assigned to a particular
camp for active duty. Mr. Mays and
Captain Hyndman made short talks,
as did Mr. Cuthbert and Lieut. Ritchie.
Dance at Walterboro.
On Friday night there was a dance
at the sidle camp at Walterboro, with
many of the boys from Luray and
here going down. It was a big success,
being well attended by the people of
Walterboro. The music was furnish
ed by the Pineland Serenaders, of
Summerville ,and was much enjoyed.
The next dlance of thi s company is
planned for the Barnwell camp Fri
day, June 5th. SeVeral orchestras
have been contacted, and it is proba
ble that Charlie Fulcher’s organiza
tion from Augusta will furnish the
music.
Baaeball.
Saturday, May 23, Georgetown de
feated Barnwell by the score of 21-
10. Georgetown made nine runs in
the first inning. After that it was
about even, with both side s playing
very loose ball.
With some of the new boys on the
team next Saturday, your reporter
feels safe to say that the team will
be hard to beat in the coming games.
We are in the cellar now with two
defeats and no wins, ^>ut watch for
our standing when the season is over.
Monday, Chaplain Gregory held re
ligious services at the camp. There
were about 70 men present.
