Daisy Deals Death to
Billions of Insesct
One Whiff Causes Nervous Breakdown
and Starvation to Flies, Mos
quitoes, Etc.
Strange as it may seem, a beautiful
red daisy closely related to the com
mon field! daisy with its orange disc
center ami white petals (she loves me
—she loves me not) is the deadliest
enemy of house flies, mosquitoes,
moths and other perennial pests. Con
tact with this colorful field flower in
stantly gives the insects a nervous
breakdown (no f oling!) and within
a few seconds, unabh to forage for
food cr water, they starve to death.
“Pyrethrum,” scientists call the
deadly essence, which they now use as
a powerful killing consiltuent in insect
spray. And today, when flies, roaches,
moths or whatnots get on the harassed
housewife’s nerves she goes them one
better. She flies for the spray gun
and gives the flies a swift and deadly
case of nervous prostration.
It was a Jugo-Slavish hausfrau who
accidentally discovered the insect-kill
ing power of the pyrethrum daisy
when she picked a 1> uquet of the
bright red owers and put them on a
table in the house. Later -he noticed
a great number of dead insects around
withered bouquet. Subsequently, small
European manufacturers gr und the
flowers into a fine powder and 1 dis
tributed it around' the continent a> a
dust to be blown at insects by means
of small bellow's. More recently,
pyrethrum daisy growing ha s become
an agricultural industry in various
countries and the Gulf Oil Corp. of
Penna.-Gulf Refining Co. imports vast
quantities of the death-dealing yellow’
dust for use in its insect sprays.
According to Dr. William A. Siman-
ton, entomologist at Gulf’s Research
Laboratories the killing action of
pyrethrum-is very rapid, when mixed
in proper quantities with an esepcially
refined hyrocarbon carrier and spray
ed a* a fine mist into a room or cup
board. When the fine mist comes in
contact with an insect, it penetrates
into the insect’s nervou s system, de
stroying the nerve cells, causing par
alysis. Within a few seconds death
results from starvation. The organs
and functions of insect bodies are de
cidedly different in many respects from
those of the human body and those
of animals and birds. Hence pyre
thrum, so deadly to flies, mosquitoes,
roaches, moths and other insect s and;
their larvae, has no effect on human
beings or their pets.
So if the dog or the cat or “the old
man” gets on the housewife’s nerves,
the Gulfspray gun won’t do much
go( d.
