Morris used bloodhounds in an effort tQ
apprehend the perpetrator of the al
leged! crime and it is reported that
one suspect hag been arrested. 'The
less falls heavily on the Risher family,

insurance on the dwelling. They had

REMARKABLE BIRD DOG IS
FEATURED IN AD SERIES
TAKEN UP.—One brindle bull
yearling about seven months old taken
up at my place near Kline several
■weeks ago. Owner can get same by
paying costs.—W. H. Harden. Kline,
s. c.
The Southerner loves a dog—par
ticularly a bird dog—and few men in
the world know about training and
shooting over a d.g than he does.
Hence, the National Championship
Feld Trial, held at Grand Junction,
Tenn., each year ,is watched with
keen interest by Southern pe pie.
Last year the famous trial was won
by Homewood Flirtations, “Flirt” fr
short, a black and white pointer bitch,
owned by H. M. Curry, Jr., cf Pitts
burgh, Pa. “Flirt” ranged the fields
beautifully, found her birds and per
formed' in every respect as a national
champion should.
“Flirt’s picture ] s the feature of >a
Chilean Nitrate cf Soda advei tisment
—one of a series appearing regularly
in this newspaper. An interesting
parallel is drawn between Nature’s
gift to this remarkable bird dog and ,to
the well known ritr gen fertilizer—
to the dog perfect balance of all the
vital elements that make “Flirt” the
dog of dt gs, and- to the nitrogen ferti
lizer an equally vital balance of major
and minor elements that make natural
Chilean the superior plant f.o'd that it
is.
—Iir“thtr case of the dog and in the
case of this nitrogen fertilizer, the
natural nitrate people point out, this
natural balance is the vital thing. It
is something Nature alone understands.
Into the natural nitrate of soda, Na
ture put many of the minor elements—
such as manganese, iodine, calcium,
boron, magnesium, potasium, etc.,—
nearly two score in all. These are im
portant to the healthy growth and' de
velopment of your crops. And the
important point, scientists agree, is
that these minor elements, so neces-
sary to crop feeding and crop health,
are present in natural Chilean in Na
ture’s 0W1 \, balance and blend.
as opposed to ignorance. The so-called
dkrk ages of Europe were age 3 of ig
norance. Enlightenment came in the
form of rebirth of the desire for
knowledge and the means to fulfill
that desire. Greece is referred to as
the light cf the ancient world because
in Greece learning reached its highest
development in all the history of civili
zation tip to that time and for many
succeeding centuries—possibly for all
time.
Light, in the sense of knowledge, is
comforting spirits of men be
cause it dispels feSw. The saying, that
it s the unknown that terrifies, is as
true as it is familiar. Ignorance gives
rise to superstition, terror. Men,
lacking knowledge, turn to some form
of witchcraft, with all the stultifying
fears it engenders. The light of
knowledge dispels the murky dimness
of terror. Once a thing is known, rec
ognized for what it is fear departs.
That, certainly, is comforting to the
spirits of men.
Light, in the literal sense of illumi
nation, excelleth ; 'in comforting the
spirits of men. Man’s refuge i s his
home. There he finds affection and
rest. There he finds a healing spirit,
an atmosphere which refreshes him
and strengthens him after the attri
tion of his struggle in the world out
side. %
What symbol, represents the home
so fully and so familiarly that its use
-is as common as any example of me
tonymy in the English language?—The
hearth, with its bright fire.
The hearth fire represents warmth,
and light, too. In earlier times, most
all of the light came from the open fire
in the living room. There the family
gathered. There the affection of man
and wife and father and son and
brother and sister expanded and flower
ed.
Time? change. The hearth fire is
no longer needed for warmth and the
firelight is no longer needed for illumi
nation. But the home remains as the
foundation of life and the two quali
ties of the hearth fire, Varmth and
light, are still its two symbols.—Con
tributed. 21

The quotation above is from Sir
Francis Bacon. Without having any
desire to gild the lily, perhaps we may
be allowed to comment very briefly on
the subject which he has expressed so
perfectly in a .single sentence.
Light is a word used broadly. Its
PAgnings are diverse, its implications
Call, I reach far outward.
