Charles Burckhalter, left last week
for Columbia, where Charles goes for
treament. His friends will be glad
to know that he i s already showing
marked improvement.
There will be no services at the
local Episcopal Church during the
month of August, due to the absence
of the Rev. Mr. Pinckney, who, with
his wdfe and daughter, will spend the
month at Sullivan’s Island.
MRS. JENKINS ENTERTAINS
FOR MISS WILMA WEEKS.
Mrs. Basil Jenkins entertained with
three tables of bridge Saturday after
noon' in honor of Miss Wilma Weeks,
of BtookviHe, Fla. The high score
prize, a jar of home made pickles, was
won by Mrs. Perry B. Bush and the
consolation, a jar of home made con
serve, was cut by Mrs. Leroy Molair.
Miss Weeks was presented with a bok
of dusting powder. The hostess, as
sisted by Mrs. H. A. Gross, served a
salami course.
SARAH ENGLISH PATTERSON
CELEBRATES FIFTH BIRTHDAY.
On Tuesday afternoon, Juty 23rd,
little* Sarah English Patterson was
hostess to about forty little friends,
the occasion being her fifth birthday.
She was the recipient of many beauti
ful gifts. Upon arrival, the little
guests were given colored paper caps
and horns by Mrs. N. G. W. Walker,
a great aunt of Sarah English. Misses
Sarah Frances Brodie and Rachel
Gleaton entertained the children with
games and a contest, which was won
by little Miss Sophie Coclin and she
was presented with ajar of candy. The
birthday cake ,iced in l white and
decorated with pink roses and pink
candles in holders, was then presented
to view. Much excitement took place
while Sarah English blew out the
candles. Ice cream and cakes were
served the little guests.

BRIDE-ELECT HONORED
AT BARNWELL.
Mrs. J. N. Dicks and Miss Claire
Dicks entertained V/edpesday morning
of last week at their home on Main
Street with a bridge luncheon for
Miss Wilma Swearingen, bride-elect,
of Trenton.
The front rooms of the hostesses’
home were thrown en suite and four
tbles were rrnged for bridge imid
a setting of colorful flowers.
The bride-elect’s place was marked
with a silver horseshoe tied with pink
tulle and adorned with tiny blue for
get-me-nots. All guests were asked
to register in the bride’s book.
After cards, the honor guest was
presented a box of linen tea napkins.
The high, score prizes were won by
Miss Dorothy Miller, of Trenton, and
Miss Elizabeth Hagood. The consola
tion was cut by Miss Eunice HilL^A
floating prize added-to the enjoyment
of the game.
Punch was passed during the game.
After cards, a lovely chicken salad
course with iced tea was served.

MRS. GREENE ENTERTAINS
JOHNSON HAGOOD CHAPTER
Mrs. G. M. Greene entertained very
delightfully the members of the John
son Hagood Chapter on last Thursday
•afternoon. Mrs. F. S. Brown, presi
dent, was in the chair and after open
ing exercise s reports from all commit
tees were heard and passed upon. Af
ter air business was laid-^aside the
hostess passed slips of paper to the
guests on which was written “Unem
ployment Relief” containing 13 num
bers. They were requested to fill out
a questionable as is done in Relief of
fices, thi s being, of course, burlesque.
When completed each applicant was
examined and his paper passed upon^
the one completing the most unique
paper was given a prize. The answers
being so ludicrous, it was found neces
sary to draw for the prizes, Mrs. J.
N. Dicks and Miss Carrie Williams
carrying off the honors. Each guesi
wag then presented with a card good
for some commodity and when pre
sented to the hostess each guest was
presented with whatever • his card
