Stirring Up a Hornet's Nest.
Senator James F. Byrnes seems to
^lave stirred up a hornet’s nest of op
position when he allegedly, reported
to President Roosevelt that South
Carolina favors amendments to'the
federal jconstitution in the interests
of the New Deal that would! further
jeopardize State’s rights. Since then
numerous ardent (?) advocate s of
State’s rights have worked themselves
into a Barkis state of mind and are
either tentative or avowed opponents
of “Jimmie” in next year’s primary.
Here’s the list so far—lopk ’em over:
Cole L. Blease, former governor and
U. S. Senator; C. T. Graydon, Colum
bia attorney; Tom Stoney, former
mayor of Charleston, and Colonel
Harllee, of Dillon, the retired “Fight
ing Colonel of the Marines.”
Not Yet, Mr. Reese.
Romulus Reese, secretary of the
State association for prohibition re
form, is reported as saying that “the
executive committee of the repealist
organization would consider advocacy
of a constitutional amendment to per
mit liquor to be sold at night and on
holidays,” thus eliminating “tjje great
est feature which allows the bootleg-
.ger to exist in competition with the
private dealers.”
If the repealist organization is seek
ing a return to the so-called prohibi
tion era, no better way could be found
than to change the constitution to per
mit the legal sale of liquor at night
pnd on holidays, but fortunately there
are more than enough common sense
South Carolinians to prevent such a
foolish change. Surely, there is suf
ficient time between sunrise and
rundown for even the thirstiest of the
thirsty to secure enough of the VO
be joyful” to “wet their whistles.”
While we think the present liquor
Tlaw is a great improvement over pro
hibition, we are still of the opinion
that a county store system would! have
served the interests of the State much
better. We believe that the State and
•counties, and not individuals, should
make the profit on liquors, and the
biggest factor in prolonging the life
of the bootlegger is the high prices
being charged for legal whiskey.
Take mildness for one thing—how
cjoes it measure up for mildness?
Chesterfields are milder—not flat or
insipid, of course, but with a pleasing
flavor.
Then take taste fot. another thing —
does it have plenty of taste?
Chesterfields taste better — not strong
but just right.
In other words, They Satisfy—
that’s my yardstick for a cigarette.
