an
Of course, it is too early to form
accurate estimate of the 1935 edi
tion of the general assembly, but thp
.first week began with the promise of
a lively session. Almost Immediately
Senator Cooke, of Horry, candidate
for Governor last summer, launched
an attack upon the judiciary for
claiming “back pay,” their salaries,
along with other constitutional offi
cers, having been cut 10 per cent, by
the legislature in its efforts to econo
mise during the dark days of the de
pression. The fiery Senator would
have the attorney general bring suits
to recover for the State the “expense
money” voted for the judges a few
years ago in lieu of salary increases,
his contention being (and we believe
that his position is eminently cor
rect) that if it be unconstitutional to
reduce their salaries it was likewise
unconstitutional to increase them.
Cooke’s attack faund an echo in the
House when Representative. Wither
spoon introduced a resolution con
demning the judges for their action
funds as long as the present adminis
tration is in control.

The solution of the liquor control
problem is being given serious con
sideration and Representative Solomon
Blatt, of Barnwell, who is the author
of one bill and the co-author of an
other, states positively that some
method of legalized sale will be adopt
ed, with the odds favoring his bill,
\vhich is modeled along the lines of
the present Virgia law and is very
similar to the old! county dispensary
system in this State, with additional
safeguards. It is safe to predict,
however, that the drys will exert
every possible effort to block aijy
legislation, either by dividing the

Williston, January 12.—The Willis
ton School Improvement Association
held its regular meeting in the gram
mar school auditorium, Tuesday, Jan
uary 8, at 4 o’clock. The meeting
was called to order by the president,
Mrs. C. C. McKnight, and a song,,
“Drink to Me only with Thine Eyes,”
was sung-by the members. The de
votional exercises were conducted by
the presidehT. Another song, “Annie
Laurie,” followed this.
Mr. Ackerman introduced the speak
ers for the afternoon, Miss Rebecca
Reid, an assistant to Mr. Baker, head
of FERA in South Carolina, Miss Reid
had as her subject, “Making South
Carolina a better place in which to
live.” She said that the place of
women was no longer in the' home
alone, but out in the world 1 , making it
a safer place for the children of South
Carolina.”
After a business session the meet-
ng adjourned to meet again the second
Tuesday in February.

ever, that the lawyer members of the
general assembly will succeed in mak

judges.
Another resolution that seems to be
meeting with popular approval was
that of Representative Ben E. Adams,
of Richland County, attacking the
present ackninistration of federal re
lief in South Carolina. The House
went on record with hardly a dissent
ing vote as being opposed to any
