tions of the Democratic primary elec
tion.
SOLOMON BLATT.
Barnwell County, always recognix
od as a leader in South Carolina, is
again leading the way and as the re
ad!-of o moat unusual political situa-
taon can be termed “blessed Bam
woO.” Which is to say that when it
comes to local politics, “there ain’t no
aich animal.V
For the second time in as many
years, the campaign opened in Barn
well County with oil of the candidates
for the major county offices unop
posed for election and it is believed
that such a record is unsurpassed in
the political history of the State.
Although a similar condition ex
isted in 1932, both the sheriff and the
coroner died before the first primary
election, necessitating the reopening
of the lists for those two offices and
two candidates announced for sheriff
while four qualified for coroner. The
deaths of Sheriff Boncil H. Dyches
and Coroner D. P. Lancaster within
the short space of three days estab
lished another political record, giving
Barnwell County three sheriffs within
as many days. Under the law in
South Carolina, the corcner succeeds
the sheriff should the latter die or
resign. Following the death of Mr.
Lancaster, who was too ill to knew
that he had become sheriff. Governor
Blackwood appointed the present sher
iff, Capt. J. B. Morris, who had for
merly served in this capacity and
who was elected in tho elecften that
followed. Another coincidence.in con
nection with this bit of political his
tory is the fact that Sheriff Dyches
was a nephew of Corcner Lancaster.
In this year of grace County Treas
urer J.J. Bell, Auditor \V. H. Manning,
Judge of Probate John K. Sne ling and
Representatives Solomon Blatt and
Winchester C. Smith. Jr., are al! run
ning for reelection without opposition.
Horace J. Crouch, who was defeated
for reelecticn as county superintendent
of education four years ago, is an as
pirant without opposition for his for
mer post, the present incumbent hav
ing declined to offer for reeleetion.
Evidently on the theory that
“what's sauce for the goose is sauce
for the gander,” the candidates for
municipal offices in the city of Barn
well are also without opposition this
summer, and the same administration,
with the exception of one alderman,
will continue to direct the affairs of
the town for the ensuing two years.
The only change in the personnel of
ihe dty council will when Herman
1. Matnrsky succeeds his ‘ brother,
Hardeesi M. Mazur sky. The unop
posed ticket as followa:
For mayor—C. G. Fuller.
For alderman—J. Buist Grubbs, W.
J. Lemon, H. L. O’Bannon, J. E. Har-
iman 1. Mazursky.
For commissioner of public works
—C. F. Molair.
It might be pointed out in passing
that Mr. Grubbs has also served the
towns of Hilda, Blackville and Willis-
tan aa aider man. ~
All of iwhich goes to show that when
the right man is found for the right
place down in this neck o’ the woods,
the voters keep him in office, which is
sufficient proof that the officeholders
in Barnwell, town a no county, are dis
charging their duties to the entire
satisfaction of the “deer peepul.”
I hereby announce myself s candi
date fcr reelection to the House of
Representatives from Barnwell Coun
ty, subject to the rules and regula
tions of the Democratic primary elec
tion.

Yawns With You
J^OOK ht the baoy in this picture.
You yawned didn’t you? Why?
Simply because one good yawn de
serves anotber. Or if you prefer to
be psychological, it's a reflex ac
tion.
At .any rate, wrhen tfce baby in
this picture made his debut on a
car card in New York s crowded
subways in behalf of a well-
known 99.4-1 per cent pure soap,
it was remarked in an equally well
known newspaper column that
everyone who looked at the baby-
yawned. And if you don’t care to
take the columnist's word for 4t,
try it on your friends.

Constantly changing conditions, politically,
economically and socially, call for a man in the

sure grasping the golden opportunities that now
present themselves to South Carolina and making
