DECEMBER 6. 1883.
One hundred and thirteen hands are
at work at Fairmont.
There was not a single arrest by
the marshals during Fair Week.
The support of paupers for the last
fiscal year cost the county $2,253.69.
Mr. Ranaom Mills, white, had an
arm severely lacerated by a circular
saw at Jenny’s mill, in Sycamore
Township, some ten days ago^
At the local option election in Eflko
on Saturday the vote stood: For
■License, 21; No License, 1. No hold
ers of real property voted.
At the local option election at.

No License 45. At Allendale, License

Of eighty-twe. subscribers who have
voluntarily, since the first of Septem
ber, promised to pay us as soon as
they sold their cotton, only seven
have so far sold. The others are
holding and we are hoping.
Mr. A. DeCaradeus, of the South
Carolina RAilway Company, begins to
day the survey of the Western exten
sion of the Barnwell fRailroad. The
line to be run gees towards Dunbar
ton via Seven Pines. It is not certain
that the line will be ^uilt but we hope
it will.
The residence of Mr. B O. Stansell
in Elko was burned on Sunday after
noon. The fire was of accidental
origin.
The local option election appointed
for today for Barnwell will not be
held as Judge Aldrich has granted an
injunction restraining the Council
from holding it, after a number of
citizens had withdrawn their names
from the petition, thereby ^reducing
the number belo^ one-third of the
voters in the last municipal election.
Mr. Robert Burckhalter died ai
F’airfax on the 26th ult.
Frank Ayer, Esq., aged 38 years,
died Monday morning.

Gen. G. Duncan Bellinger, of Col

Farmer D. P. Key talked the right
philosophy when he said that he had
made this year on 15 acres as -much
cotton as he cared to sell at present

On Saturday evening about half
past ten o’clcck, Mr. W. Perry Ussery,
aged 36 ye^ars, was standing in con
versation with Mr. Marvin N. Hol
land on the edge of the carnival
grounds in the rear of the Opera
House when from the sheltering dark-

ness an assassin' with too true aim
shot him to instant death. Mr. Hol
land was wounded painfully but net
seriously in the arjn and neck behind
the ear, one sh<?t inflicting the injury.
Seveial pistols were fired at the flee
ing assassin, one ball passing through
the thigh of Mr. W. H. Birt, of the
police force, who was seeking to ap
prehend the murderer. The assailant
escaped after crossing Turkey Creek
on an unused footlog near the swim
ming place and evidently entering
some ^vehicle on the public road, but
no human effoit will be spared to un
ravel this dark, sad mystery, and bring
the Criminal to deserved justice.

Death of a Little Boy.
A«hleigh, Dec. 5.—Tire friends of
Mr. and Mis. J. L. Owens were sad
dened by the death of their little five-
year old son, Ralph, which occurred
at the University Hospital in Augus
ta Wednesday morning. Besides his
parents, Ralpto leaves one brother,
Carl Owens, and two sisteis, Louise
and Myrtis Owens.
