fine corn yield at
As
\ 12 8- CENTS A BUSHEL
Walhalla, Nov. IS.—An average
yield for the past three years of 119.5
bushel^per acre on the same five-
acre plot of Oconee land is the fine
record of Paul Smith at Ma l dison l who
thus sets the pace for farmers in the
State-wide corn improvement demon
strations being conducted for the Ex
tension Service.
Smith’s yeild this year, as reported
t>y G. H. Griffin, Oconee farm agent,
was 112 bushels acre, or a total
of 560 bushels on the' five-acre plot.
In 1931 he produced an average yield
on his five-acre plot of 125 bushels
^per_ acre, and in 1932 an average
yield of 121% bushels per acre on the
v^same plot of bottom land, located on
Tugaloo river. That Mr. Smith has
produced these yields on same plot of
land for - three consecutive years
proves very conclusively that the high
yield is no accident. -*r
“In following the practices suggest
ed for the demonstrations towards
more economical production Mr. Smith
was able this year to produce his corn
at 12.8 cents per bushel,” says Mr,
Griffin, who reports further regarding
these practices:
“Mr. Smith attributes his success to
thorough preparation of the soil, suita
ble variety, proper spacing, time of
planting, and the use df a sufficient
quantity of readily available nitrogen
at the proper time. The variety he
has used during these three years is
Everett’s Prolific. Mr. Smith says
that it is impossible to make large
l and most profitable yields of corn
: without the use of the proper amounts
of readily available nitrogen as a
side-dresser when the corn is any
where from 40 to 60 days old.
“He also believes that a portion of
the nitrogen should be derived from
leguminous • cover crops turned back
to the soil for the most economical
pi eduction of corn.”
