Mr. Seaborn Wilson, an excellent
citizen, wa- killed by a way freight
train on the Port Royal Road about
two miles above Appleton last Fiiday
morning. He was walking on the
track at the time and being deaf and
dumb could not hear the approach of
the train. He had never married but
lived with his venerable father, Mr.
K. Wilson. An inquest was held on
Saturday by Trial Justice Bostick.

of the saw and hammer make us mer
ry. Trade is lively, cotton receipts
are heavy and the faces and hearts of
cur merchants and farmers are
bright with content and courage. . .
The fall campaign of the skating rink
will soon be inaugurated by Mr. John
Folk, and as business grows duller

Mr. Charles T. Mason, of Sumter,

has invented a cotton picker which
has, after a fair test, been .pronounced
* success. It is operated by horse
power and on the first field trial gath-
ered 200 pounds per hour, and the
inventor expects to double its picking
capacity so that one man and mule
will be able to gather three hales per
day. No .-tatement of the cost of the
machine ha.- been made, but it is
promised that they will Ik* ready for
the next crop. Coming hot on the
heels of the civil rights decision this
is bad news for the colored monopo
list cotton pickers.

Mis. Lucy D. B^lack, widow of the
late Mr. C. A. Black, of this county,
died on the 20th inst. at her home in
Augusta in her 62nd year. She was
a sister of Judge T. S‘. Dunbar.
The handsome residence of Dr. E.
C. Smith on Church Street, Williston,
was burned about 2 o’clock Friday
morning. Dr. Smith was away at
the time, having gene to the Baptist
Association at Springtcwn.
The Boulevard to Mercatus wa»
completed yesterday, and the 14 mile
distant capital of Rosemary is only
an hour and a half’s drive from the
couit he use. The live good farmers
furnished the teams and wagons, the
chain gang dug and loaded the clay,
which w'a.- spread five to six inches
deep on the sand, making a solid road
bed ten or twelve feet wide, long last
ing. Rosemary is all right even if it
has no railroad. Its people owe less
money per capita and have more in
their smokehouses and storerooms than
many milroad townships can boast,
of.
Senator Bates surprised us again
by laying on our table two bunches ot
matured paper shell pecans, one con
taining a c’uster of eight, the other
of seven nuts. They beat the record
for prolific production and their quali
ty is equal to quantity.
John Barton Payne, a retired Jade
and lawyer of International reputation.
U serving his twelfth year as chairman
of the American Ked Cross. Hls service
is without pay, and bis appointment ie
by the President of the United States.
He has served by appointment in bigb
