Schools to Get No More.
Columbia, October 16.—In clarify
ing 1933 school legislation, Attoiney
General John M. Daniel ruled today
that revenue from the State beer tax
should go into the general education
appropriation instead of supplement
ing it.
The attorney general issued hi.?
opinion in response to a request from
other State officials for legal guid
ance.
It was pointed out that the act le
galizing beer in South Carolina pro
vided that the State’s 40 per cent, of
beer taxes “.;hall be paid into the
State treasury for school purposes,”
while the school act did not mention
the beer tax but appropriated $1,124,-
000 “in full for all State aid” for
1933-34.
Daniel held the 40 per cent, may be
used for “any school purposes.” It
does not, he said, “go to school dis
tricts a- 6 an addition” to the $1,124,-
000.
t ’
The 40 per cent, of the beer tax go
ing to counties, the attorney general
added, “is to be used for general coun
ty purpeaes.”
It ha been called to the attention
Ttrr Prnp(r-St-Mtmtd that th* ttvmj
in last week’* i»«ue, “County Gets
Beer Reveune,” was in ctror rs to the
am unt- received by Barnwell and
other count/ - fr m thi.< source to
ward- the r >ay of teachers. The in
formation in question was taken from
a daily newspaper and the Hgures
weie sent out f.-om Columbia. Evi
dently, the t*ix derived frem the sale-'
of beer wa included in the total
amc unts -ent to the various counties
fiom the general fund. The editor
regrets the error and gladly makes
the correction.
