f. c TVowu of MuItitudU That Are U»edl| Some Obsolete Everybody is familiar with such eotiQS of multitude as a swarm of tees, a cluster of grapes, a brood of chickens, a galaxy of stars, a litter of pigs, a pile of books, a shock of corn, a set ol china, a stud of mares, a team of oxen, and many others in common use. There are, however, many strange and practically obsolete nouns of muT* tltude which In some cases it seems at pity to lose. Here are a few: a mumnmraclon of starlings, a siege of herons, a fall of woodcocks, a flight of swallows, a cast of hawks, a pride of lions, a gagle of geese or women, a nide of pheasants, a spring of teals, a mute of hounds, * cowardice of curs, a take of fish, a tribe of goats, a sorth of mallards, a singiar of hoars, a rouleau of money, a muster of peacocks, a watch of nTgTiIIngales, "a clattering of choughs, f. Most people use ‘‘couple” for two dogs of any breed, hut the terms of venery, while admitting a ‘‘couple - ’ of foxhounds, harriers, or beagles, de mand “brace” for two pointers, set ters, terriers, or greyhounds. And while three of the last group make a “leash,” three of any of the first kinds are “a couple and a half.”—Tit-lilts Magazine. made suit to me to grant unto him Letters of Administration of the Es tate of and etfectg of Janies Buist; THESE ARE, THEREFORE, to cite and admonish all and singular the kindred and creditors of the said James Buist, deceased, that they be and appeal befpre me, in/the Court of Probate, to be held at Barn well, S. Augur or Soothsayer of Early Rome Was Wise Guy The word “augur," meaning to prophesy, Is derived from the augur, or soothsayer of early Home. The augur held a position of great respect in the Homan government and seldom was any great undertaking launched until the augur had been visited to ascer- tsin what the fates might be holding in store. Usually there were two augurs, there being more work than one could handle and in later years the number was increased. The prophesies of the augurs were based on certain birds and other mys tic signs known only to the holder of the ntfice. Tile augur held office during his life time and thus none knew hi* secrets Ktve those destined to succeed him the secrets twin* imp.irted only when death was at hand.
