Out in Denver, Colo., the other diy
a deaf and dumb couple was married
by a deaf and dumb preacher. That’s
our idea of a “quiet weddin^ ! ,. ,,
Unlese one John Nance Garner, of
Texas, wish** to be consigned to tee
total oblivion he’d better follow the
lead of the late Thomas R. Marshall,
who said, “What this country needs
is a good 5-cent cigar,” and manufac
ture himself an epigram.
Frank R. Kent, Washington cor
respondent and political writer, in an
article in The Baltimore Sun, refers
to “the unfortunate Hoover." It
seems to us that all of us who had to
live through the four years erf
Hoover’s maladministration are the
unfortunate ones.
It is not always true that “a
prophet is not without honor save
in his own country.” Over in Geor
gia last week Paul Brown, an attor
ney, was elected to an unexpired term
in Congress. In his home county,
Elbert, he received 2,624 votes out of
m total of 2,670. Congress man-elect
Brown should be as proud of his
home people as they evidently are of
him.

This country is famous for its
wreck* and the said wreck* may be
divided into three clasles, vizzly:
1. —Automobile wreck*.
2. —Mental wreck*.
8.—(Physical wreck*.
There are numerous contributory
cause* of wreck*, especially in the
automotive wreck class. The*e cause*
nssy be segregated on a percentage
beets a* follows:
Lcoee nuts ' 5 percent.
Hugging, 1 hand 3 percent.
, Hugging, both hand* .. 15 |>ercent.
Cigarette, 5 percent.
Bee up britches 5 percent.
Kissing 5 percent.
Hornet in eye 5 p-.-rcent.
Back-seat drivers 6 percent.
Sitting in lao* 8 percent.
75 m. p. h 10 percent.
BTowout* 3 percent.
Other fellow 10 percent.
Trdck hog* 10 percent.
Fools, plain* 4 percent
Fools, dams 14 percent.
Baby drivers 2 percent.
Dodging wimmen 12 percent.
Mental wrecks are caused by au
tomobile wrecks and working in
banks and matrimony. Matrimony is
responsible for nearly twice os many
mental wrecks as bank 8 , but common
poverty—caused by the loss of
money belonging to other people as
swell as yourself—dismantles and dis
hevels thousands of btains every year.
Suicide usually follows the wreckage
of loa* of fortune and they call that
—“he went crazy, and blowed ’em
out.”
Physical wrecks are brought
about by breakfast foods, sunbaths,
patent medicines, out-late-o-nights,
wimmen, deflation, depression, de
bility, hen-peckedness, corsets, past
due notes, tight shoes, opium, cats
fffhting after 1 p. m., 6-cent cotton,
high-priced gasoline, and mothers-in-
law.
I knew a man once that was per
fectly happy; weighed 168 pounds, ro
bust, healthy, had plenty of money, a
lovely family—but he decided to get
rich quick and commenced to “gam
ble on the board.” In 3 months he
wae a physical wreck, in 6 months he
wa® a mental wreck, and in 9 months
be wan a corpse in an automobile
wreck. His demise took place the
afternoon he received' a wire for
more margin, and margin was the
4fcii¥ he didn’t have no mere of.
Let’s all avoid wrecks from now on
bf*not doing the things that fetch
’em on. * ~

pray in public when called upon to
do so. It seems easy, but I believe
it is very difficult to the untrained,
and 1 am like that. I have never felt
that I “could make the grade,” and I
am not expected to make public
prayers at my church or anywheie
else.
A few Sabbaths ago, a friend
called by and picked me up and took
me to his church. It was a strange
church and he is a praying man.
Nothing suit* him better than to be
called upon to lead in prayer. He
took me in and sat me down in the
amen corner. That’s where he sita
regular.
1 knew very few members of the
:ongregation and had < nly a casual
acquaintance with the preacher. Af
ter the first song, 1 began to realize
thst I occupied a very dangerous
ipos.tion indeed and was liable to be
called upon to pray. 1 began to
iweat and perspire. The preacher—
seeing me with with Elder Jones—
cei’ainly expected me to Ire a pray-
mg-in-pub.ic guy.
1 didn’t know what to do. My
face turned a* red as * lipstick and
my nose l»egan to itch and my eyes
weie running water. 1 was tick at
the stummick and otherwise uncom-
foi table and my cl.'hes were too
tight all over and my left »hoe was
pimhing my lig toe something ter
rible. I tried to help sing the next
•ang, but my mouth was so dry 1
couldn’t utter a sound.
The preacher got up and opened
his Bible arxl read a few verges and
announced—"Brethren, we will now
have a seige of prayer.” He started
the "seige” cff. 1 knew he was going
to call on me just as soon a* he
got thru. 1 thought once of fainting,
so’s I would be carried out. 1 suffered
jvriigs of deaih during those minutes.
His prayer ended and ne called on
Wro. Biown, who was sitting by me.
1 knew my time had come. I be
gan to try to think up a nice short
prayer. The only thing that sounded
prayerful that crept into my mind
was: “O Lord, make, u/ thunkful for
these and all other blessings.” In
another % second, I found myself re
peating—“Now I lay me down to
isleep.” That’si the only ptayers 1
could po8sihtjr"thlnk of and 1 waa
sweating faster and faster.
Is There a Doctor in the Audience?
_I think it ia fine to be able to
Bro. Green prayed next. He was
2 ? eats <ff. I saw the preacher watch
ing me from the comer of his eye,
and I knew I’d be next. I twitched and
squirmed and wiggled, and you could
hear me breathing up in the choir.
The suspense was awful. I was sick
enough to ^ie. When I came to a
a minute or so later, I had torn 26
pages of a song book and was chew
ing up the backs. About that time,
the preacher took his text and then
came the collection. 1 was thankful
for all blessings and dropped in two
dollars, exery cent I had. In 30
minutes, I was a normal human be
ing. That’s the closest shave I ever
had except the time the train ran
into my car.
As You Like It.
There are two distinct kinds of
reckless drivers in the world today,
vizzly: The guy who pokes along in
frent of you to shew you how slow he
can drive, and his brother, who squirts
by you at 75 miles per hour to show
you how fast he can drive. As for
me and my house, give me the fast-
idot every time.

It seems that 3.2 beer has begun
to register a few kicks. At first the
kicks came because it was tos weak,
the second kicks came because it *wa«

seems to be in the tenth bottle. Skin

beer. They can’t hold enough for a
