Carolina POWER COMPANY X J. W. RUFF, Local Manager HOPOCATRUC By G. Chalmers McDermid. Henry T. Maddux, Airronomist, of Atlanta, Ga., has been doing: some re markable research work on cotton rust during the past few s ummers-and he sends me the following information for use in HOPOCATRUC. - _ Cotton rust is not a rust. Cotton rust is not a disease. Cotton rust is caused by lack of proper drainage al though poor drainage aggravates the rust condition. Lack of vegetable matter in the soil does not cause rust, but vegeta ble matter added to light textured soil 9 will increase' the moisture hold ing capacity and help to reduce rust. Cotton rust damage octures on both rich and poor soils. Cotton rust damage varies from year to year, and with soil types. Rust damage and moisture are inti mately related. Cotton may be given adequate sup plier of nitrogen and phosphorous, but if sufficient iwtash i s not applied, cotton will rust. Cotton rust is potash hunger and it can be prevented by supplying the crop with adequate amounts of pot ash. Cotton rust fan be controlled after its inception by proper applications of potash. The amount of extra potash needed to control cotton rust will depend on the ameunt of nitrogen and .phosphoric arid present, the amount of potash supplied the crop in the original fer tilizer, the potash deficiency of the particular soil, and or the potash de ficiency created by moisture condi- ■tioas. The actual potash required will vary from year to year. Cotton rust damage is also depend ent upon cotton diseases; wilt, noma- todo, fungus diseases and bacterial blights. Plenty of potash in the cotton fer tilizer is disease and weather insur ance. Call cotton rust by its right name—Potash hunger. As far back a s 1882, Dr. Charles Dabney, Director of the North Caro lina Agricultural Experiment Station tcported:—“So far aa experiments go fcainite appears to be the most effec tive agent which has been used against those destructive and myster ious diseases of cotton which we call ■fruat and ‘blirfht’ ” Many farmers of the Southeast are now using an 8-3-8 for cotton crops, and some of them are finding that even then they need an additional amount of hi-kainit in their chopping time top dressers.
