HOME DEMONSTRATION NEWS.
Community Canning meetings have
been held at Pleasant Hill, Double
Ponds, Reedy Branch end Meyer’s
Mill, where garden discussions were
held and canning demonstrations
given by the home agent. Every
women attending these meetings
agreed to can at least 2 quarts of
fruits and vegetables for the “needy”
of their community. Other communi
ty meetings are planned for the near
future.
Some of the products already can
ned are soup mixture, corn, beets,
okra, lima beans, held peas, tomatoes
and tomato juice.
Canned Figs, An Ideal Breakfast Food
Gather figs just ripe, with stems.
Add 1 cup of cooking soda to one
gallon of boiling water, cover 6 qts.
of figs with this, let stand 15 minute.?
Remove, rinse thoroughly, that is
through several waters until the last
water used is perfectly clear. Make
a medium syrup using 1 cup of sugar
to two cups of water, bring this
syrup to the boiling point and pack in
jars, cover with boiling syrup, seal
tightly and process immedtiately 5
minutes in boiling water.
Pears.
Peel, cut in halves, core and cook
in boiling medium syrup (1 cup of
sugar to 2 cups of water) for 4 to
8 minutes, according to the size of
the fruit. This precookrhg make?
hard varieties of pears pack better.
Pack pears hot into cojfcainers and
fill them up with boiling syrup. Pro
cess containers of all sizes 20 minutes
in boiling water.
Vegetable Soup Mixture.
This should consist of a mixture
which is made in the proportion of
one-half tomato, one-fourth corn or
tiny lima beans and one-fourth okra
with reasoning added. One slice of
onicn 2 inches in diameter should be
added to each No. 2 can. Dice toma
toes, boil corn on cob 5 minutes be
fore cutting, cut okia in rounds one-
fourth inch thick, boil butter beans
10 minutes. Mix all ingredients Well,
boil 20 minutes, fill containers with
hot material, seal and process two
hours continuously boiling point or HO
minutes under 10 pounds steam pres
sure.
Tomatoes.
Select firm uniformly red, ripe to
matoes of medium site. Put inter
trays and lower into boiling water
for one minute. Remove and cut out
core with a slender pointed knife with
out breaking into the seed cells. Peel
promptly and pack into jars. Add
sugar, salt seasoning 1 teaspoon to
pints and 2 teaspoons to quart- and
fill jars with juice.
To obtain this juice crush very
ripe tomatoes and strain the juice
through the seive or cloth; bring the
juice to a boil and fill jar or tin can.

a resident of Bamwel), died at 11 o’
clock Sunday night at the Veterans’
Hospital at Oteen, near Asheville, N.
C M after an illn&is of several months.
During his residence V Barnwell he
was a rural mail carjer and had
many friends here who. will learn
with regret of his death.

ed the day of November, 1925,
and recorded in the office of the
Clerk of Court for Barnwell County,
in Book 9-S, page 163; deed Belle
Hair Willis, Edwin B. Willis and Mil
dred Willis to Walter Tate Willis, J r .,
and Marion A. Willis, dated the 17th
day of November, 1925, and recorded
in the office of the Cleark of Court
for Barnwell County, in Book 9-S,
page 162.
Terms cf sale, cash, purchaser to
pay for papers and Revenue Stamps.
And the Master shall require of the
successful bidder a deposit of $200.00
(being less than 3 per cent, of the
judgment herein) immediately upon
the conclusion of the bidding as a
guarantee of good faith, and upon
such bidder’s failure to make said de
posit the Master shall immediately
re-sell said property on the tertns
above provided. In case of any sub
sequent raised bid, as provided by
law, each such bidder shall make a
like deposit. The amount of such
final deposit shall be forfeited and
applied to the judgment and costs in
the event of non compliance by such
last bidder within forty days from
the date of public sale as herein pro
vided.
