1 HE BARNWELL PEOPLE-SENTINEL, BARNWELL* SOUTH CAROLINA M ' V S "t V . — • v 2 CAPTAIN STATEMENT BY CANDDATE FOR SHERIFF i > MANY YEARS OF MY LIFE have been spent in public service, as Supervisor or as Sheriff of Barnwell County. My record is an open book and I feel that ufider all of the circumstances I deserve election for the full term. I desire to make the following statements: (1.) 1 had decided to become a candidate for the long term against the late Sheriff Dyches, but on account of his physical condition, after conference with many of his friends, and feeling that a hard race might cut short his days I withdrew from the race and hoped that he would be unopposed and would live for a long time. Being very much in financial need the County secured me temporary' work under the Governor and upon the death of Sheriff Dyches, without solicitation on my part, but feeling, as I know the Delegation must have felt, that I was justly entitled to the place, I was recommended, appointed and am now serving as your Sheriff. (2) There are always a certain number of campaign lies that are spread over the county. Number one that I have heard about myself is, that upon the death of Sheriff Dyches, and my anointment that I gave Mrs. Dyches twelve hours to vacate the Jail and wanted to put someone else in charge. This is utterly false and can be disproved by asking Mrs. Dyches. The truth is, that when I was appointed, Senator Brown asked me to take care of Mrs. Dyches, who was living at the Jail and to allow Mr. Jut Still and Mr. Gilmore Harley to work for the balance of the year, as they had been working under Sheriff Dyches. Neither of these gen tlemen are employed directly by the Sheriff, but both were put on by the County Board of Directors and the Delegation. Mr. Still was employed by Sheriff Dyches at the request of the County Board of Directors to assist in tax collections. Mr. Gilmore Harley was employed originally by the County Board, as County Mechanic and upon the death of Mr. Wade Grubbs, in order to save money he was switched to Deputy to use the ftfnds that had been appropriated to pay Mr. Wade Grubbs as Deputy. I have Mrs. Dyches’ affidavit in proof of above statement and will be glad to show it to anyone who wishes to see it. ^ .. ■ 4- } ^.** • T. y , - * .. (3) All of these people, Mrs. Dyches, Mr. Still and Mr. Harley, I propose to leave just as they are through the remainder of this year, and if Mrs. Dyches wants to stay longer she may. I feel that the people of Barnwell County will approve of my letting Boncil Dyches’ widow use quarters at the County Jail until such time as she sees fit to make other ai^MSfements. As to the deputies, beginning January 1, 1933, in case I am elected, I assure the public that I will make appointements then which I believe will meet with approval. (4) 1 have nothing to say against my opponent. He is a good business man, 4)ut totally without ex perience as a law officer. I have had more than twenty-five years in la*w enforcement and not only that, my past record shows that I kept tax executions in good shape without breaking anybody up.
