JULY 6, 1882.
Salesday.—There was very little
fttv-perty dispose 1 of Monday. Only
Inn. or three mall tracts of land
■wvre sold, which offered but little at
traction to the public. The attend
ance was the smallest we have ever
nr/wn, but larpe enbURh tc i?c‘t up a
fiefct The boarding houses we don’t
tinnk realized a nickel apiece.
TV Crops.—Most of th e farmers
have finished laying by their corn
crops, and under the most favorable
circumstances for yean*. Cotton and
all other crops throughout the county
reported as being very fine. If
rainfall continues with no dis
aster, what a glorious harvest we’U
next fall.
Home.—On Satmilay night Col.
Riley, Col. Tobin, Mr. Nat Walker
-and Auditor Faust assembled at the
Court House and treated an appre
ciative audience to some very fine
aMsic. Dancing, sinking, etc., was
pretty freely indulged in.

pleased to publish the names of all
those who win prizes.

On Monday night Ricfeftrd Duncan
Susannah Duncan, colored, has-
and wife, got into a dispute
which led to blows. The latter seized
a hatchet and inflicted an ugly gash
m the former’s head. Jealousy seems
to have been the case. Susannah
Pergonal.—The many friends of
Dr. Geo. R. C. Todd and family will
be pleased to learn that they have
returned to Barnwell from their so
journ in Charlestnn for several
months. Dr. Todd’s knowledge of the
medical science renders him quite an
acquisition to Barnwell and adjacent
country.
Mr. H. B. Tobin returned to Barn
well on Monday last and received the
congratulations of many warm friends
after spending several months in the
West. Henry gives glowing ac
counts of the wild Western scenes,
but concludes that there is no place
like home.

Many Soils Too Acid
Field tests show that acidity has
reached a point in many soils where it
is retarding plant growth and reducing
crop yields. Any increase in acidity
this year will have an extremely ad
verse effect on growth. -Once fcrops
have been planted, the best safeguard
i« to side-dress with a non-acid material
like Chilean nitrate. Experiments In
Alabama show that nitrate reduces
acidity by the same extent that other
materials increase it.
