The prohibitiin submission plank in
the Republican platform w-rs evident
ly written by “Andy” of the firm of
“Amo.* ‘n’ Andy,” and means, “Well,
yes and no, but mostly what.”
Mr. Blease, candidate for the U. S.
Senate, says that present financial
condition.* in South Carolina are due
to the rood bond issue. Well, what
cause.) similar conditions in other
States that haven’t r ad bond issues?
The United States g vernment has
appropriated more money this year
for th,. relief of the -1.000,<mm» Ameri
can veterans of the World War than
has been appropriated l>y (<rea^4
Britain, France, Italy, Canada apd
Germany for their .IK.000,000 ex-ao|-
diers. And yet a certain element is
trying to put the country into bank
ruptcy by forcing immediate payment
of the soldiers’ bonus.
Balancing Budgets.
The individual takes stock of his in
come and tries to keep hi* expendi
tures within that limit.
Uncle Sam ascertains the largeest
•mount that his many nieces, nephews,
couaia* and what have you think that
they can spend, waste or throw away
and then levies sufficient taxes to
pay the bill.
In each instance it is called “balanc
ing the budget.”
PcJitical Slackers.
Last week, the Calhoun Times took
the county candidates t<» task be
cause 11 or 12 out of the lot Were not
•ubscriben* to that paper, - declaring
that “it is a peculiar slant of human
nature, where « candidate is suffi
ciently interested id himself ami in
his county, to aspire for an office of
trust and importance, yet is ni>t suf
ficiently concerned to pay the small
sum of $1.50 in order to ke.p abreast
of the affairs of his‘county and sup
port an institution so ’vitally impor
tant to the county. . . . Ther-* is
room for suspicion that a higher
premium is placed on a dollai and a
half than on any real concern L r the
county and its vitally essential in-
atitutions.”
Editor Dreher’s remark* prompted
us to examine the list of candidates
in Barnwell County and we found .that
nin^ out of the 24 aspirants for
political preferment are non-subscri
bers. That is nearly 40 per cent.
A letter in the same issue of the
St. Matthews paper, signed “Citizen,”
commented on the fact that only one
local merchant had an advertisement
in a recent issue of The Times. That
condition is likewise tiue of Barnwell
and a number of other towns in lower
South Carolina—the business people
ju.«t won’t advertise, claiming that “it
doesn’t pay.” And yet a large
national advertiser recently sent The
People-Sentinel a n olectrotyped ad- 1
vertisement by first class mail, special |
delivery, the postage alene costing'
22.20, to .say nothing of the cost of i
the “cut” and the publication thereof.!
