V \ #AGE THE BA^NWE^L PEOPLE-SENTINEL, BARNWELL, SOUTH CAROLINA THURSDAY, APRIL 14TH; 1932. APRIL 13, 1882. The Fish Supply.—John Lambert, king fisherman, says that there are more fish in tb* wateri around Barn- well this .'prinK than in any previous year in the past ten. The Weather.—The oldest inhabi tant tells us that this spring is very similar to that of 1849. In that year there was snow on the 14th ami heavy frost on the 15th of April. The fruit crop was fair, the yield of corn ex cellent, but cotton crops were poor. hundred yaids broad. The substan tial frame stables of Mr. S. C. Cave, two miles from town, were blown HymeneaL—Married, at Hard burg, S. C., on Wednesday, 5th inst., by Rev. Lucius Cuthbert, Mr. John G. Thompson, of Williston, to Miss Sallie K. Clyatt, of Aiken County. To our happy young friends we tender our best wishes for their lifelong peace fulness and prosperity. The Matheny Cultivator.—This new and valuable invention of a w'ide awake young Blackvil! e planter has been thorough'y tested and approved. With it, in the earlier working of crops, one hand and horse can do as much as two under our old system. With it one ploughman can bring from six to eight acre s of cotton to a stand a day, aijd wherever introduced it will do a great' deal towards re ducing the cost of cultivation and supplying the scarcity of labor. Court House Notes.—Robert Al drich, Esq., went to Charleston on Saturday evening to take part in the defense of our fellow-citizens in the election trials. Mr. Mike Brown of Blackville has bought the Herbert Brown store and the six acre lot south of the Presby terian Church. We would like to register him as a citizen of Barn well. Sunday’s Storm.— Between three and four o’clock on Sunday afternoon a severe wind, hail and rain storm visited thi s township. The track of the hurricane was not more than a down and completely wrecked. Orre - valuable hor.-e was instantly killed, but six other mules and horses were rescued, fum the ruins and found to be only sightly injured. The rain fall was the heaviest ever known in that neighborhood. Jack Jeffcoat tells us that 150 p!ne trees were blown down within 100 yards of his hou-e and that when the storm sub sided the hail stones were two inches deep on the floor, and that lails were -eartHed-fifiy-yards hv the wind. Blackville.—Pat Drew is a champion gardener. Ten days ago he had pra ties a s large as his heart. Last week Mr. J. J. Whaley caught below hi- mill at one haul of his seine seventy-five trout. Mr. James Diamond has a perfect stand of cotton on twenty acres plant ed in March. Mr. G. W. Pi ice’s shops are crowd ed with sick cotton planters and shabby genteel vehicles, which are being handsomely repaired and made good as new. Mr. J. B. Zorn is making a specialty of manufacturing the popular Mathe ny Cultivator. Editorial. # Political doctors are numerous. They are as blatant and aggressive as pateht medicine mixers. Each has a panacea that prdVnises to cure all the ills to which our body politic is heir. An extra ses-ion of the General Assembly for the purpose of redis tricting the State seems probable. At its last session the Legislature provided for the election of Congress men at large in case its representa tion s hall be increased. . . . We have sufficient confidence in the good judgment of Governor Hagood to ap prove whatever he shall, after a care ful survey of the situation, decide to be best. L. O. Pender, Clerk J. J. H. Moody 27.25 HOPOCATRUC By G. Chalmers McDermid. I have had several inquiries during the past week as to the advisability of the use of sulphate of potash in watermelon and tomato fertilizers. Judging from results which I have .^een over the watermelon producing territory, I would say that a side dresser analyzing about 0-5-25, with the potash derived 25 per cent from sulphate and 75 per cent from muri ate of potash, is about what the melon grower.* get their best results from. As for the us e of sulphate of potash on tomatoes, I would say that I haven’t much information on the sub ject, but a great many commercial tomato growers tell me that they in sist that at. least 25 per cent of the potash in their tomato fertilizers be derived from the sulphate of potash. You can take that statement for what it Us worth to you. Most of the com- "merc»al tomato growers on the Beaufort and Charleston County farms use 1000 pounds of 8-4-10 per .acre. A great many of them side dress with another 500 or 600 pound s of the same fertilizer just about the time the first “hands” begin to form. In side dressing watermelons, some growers put out their mixtures when the plants have four leaves or when they start to run. Other grower.- wait until the plants begin to bloom well. At any rate side dressing watermelons is the thing to do, and if the side dresser analysis runs about 0-5-25, the quality a nd size of the melon s is generally superior. Borne of us are wondering what to 'do about our azalea plants which had their bark sjfl't during the freezing weather some time ago. I had a talk with Mr. Simmons of Simmons Nur sery Co., the other day, and he ad vised me to cut off the shoots which were thus damaged, and that new gaowth would come out during the summer. Ilf you haven’t noticed your plants for thi g troubl e take a careful look at the base of the plants which had made vigorous growth tiurihg the 60 days preceding the freete, * and you will probably shed tears, as I did. I cut my plants away about two 'weeks ago, and they are beginning to ahow promie e of new sprouts already. ' It took plenty of nerve to cut ’em, *ut when l get instructions from t.someone wfaf knows his subject, I obey. Congratulations! Mr. P. B. Brad ley, on shipping a carlod of lambs to the East. Would that more farm ers in the Coastal area of South Carolina follow your example. Tennessee is one of the great lamb producing Southern States. If Ten nessee can do it why can’t we in South Carolina? We may not have blue grass, hut our pasturage is as good as any in the whole U. S. A. And ordinarily spring lambs are just as good a* gold dollars.,. Breed ing stock is cheap, cotton acreages are falling backward, many of us are growing more grain that we ever did before. Why not add a few sheep to your farming program? Fertilized your lawn yet? Use a pound of 7-7-7 or 7-10-7 for every square foot of area in your lawn. One of my good friends told me last week that I hadn’t recommended nitrogen in the 7-7-7, so here’s a 10 per cent recommendation if you care to have it. A pound of feitilizer in the right place at the right time is better than ten pounds of fertilizer put there too late. Upon Your Kneea A marble cutter, with chisel and hammer, was changing a stone Into a statue. A preached looking on. said: “1 wisli I could deal such clanging blows ou stony hearts.” The work man made answer: “Maybe you could, If you worked like me, upon, yunr knees.”—Contributed by Verta M.
