CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
AT JOYCE BRANCH CHURCH
ThejCeotennial celebration, commem
orating the organization of the Joyce
Branch Baptist Church one hundred
years ago; was held yithin its walls
cn Sunday afternoon, November 29th,
at 3:30 o’clock, every seat being oc
cupied and crowds continued to pour
in from Augusta, EHentott, Meyer’s
Mill, Dunbarton, Barnwelj, Williston
and various other sections of the
county.
The Rev. W. R. Davis, the pastor,
was at the helm, and was ably assist
ed by the Rev. Mr. Price, of the Dun
barton Church, and the Rev. Mr.
Clark, cf the Meyer’s Mill Church.
The decoraticn s were appropriately
and artistically arranged; a well-tplan-
ned music program was beautifully
rendered with Miss Ruth Rogertfat the
piano, Ity-s. Norman Anderson and
daughter;-Daisy, of Barnwell, with
violins and thF'erTtirp chorus singing
in perfect haimony. ^
Special attention was given to the
solo by Mrs. B. F. Owens, and the
quartet composed of four young men
of Meyer’s Mill, Oland Meyers, Char
les Ellis Roy Whitsell and Mr. Guth-
eridge. The writer has never had
the pleasure of listening to a more
splendidly rendered program.
The history of this church, from its
organization in 1831 to this date,
1931, wa s compiled and read by Mrs.
Lonnie Corley; the writer would like
to go into detail? of this history
which was most interesting, but am
afraid the edito r would falter at its
length, but will say that-Mrs. Corley
is an excellent reader and writer.
The history of the Woman’s Mis
sionary Society, orgainzed forty years
ago, and the splendid work done by
it through the years, was written and
read by Mrs, Georgia Ander-on Necse
in a most efficient manner.
I am not an Enthusiast, but will say
that the entire-.program was Wonder
fully rendered—It did credit to each
and every one who took part
At the condu-ion cf the ceremonies,
the writer ha i a strong inclination to
rise and burst firth with pfaiA.-; hut,
nay—just at this moment, my memory
revert- to the days of boyhood or
young manhood, ic r it was here I met
a beautiful young girl, and near here
that I wooed amt won her—it was one
bf the pastors of this church who
performed the ^eremony that united
this beautiful young lady and me in
the Holy Bomb of Matrimony; it was
he who baptized me and he who bap
tized her—the Rev. Frederick J. San
ders.
Th e Joyce Branch Baptist Church,
with all of its post and present mem
bership, is as dea r to me a s my own
old Seven Pines. \
Mr. Davis then stated that the
church wanted him to preach a serm in
on this -occa-ion, and taking fo r his
text Heb. 11-27, “By faith he forsook
Egypt net fearing the wrath of the
King; for he endumh as seeing him
who is invisible,” deliveiei a strmon

delivered. « -
The write r had the pleasure-on this
occasion of meeting and conversing
with many of his old and new friends,
among them Mr. and Mrs. Furman H.
Dicks were numbered; I would like to
mention the names of others if apace
permitted.

“Bad Company.”
Helen • Twelvetrees in “Bad Com
pany” gives a clever answer to such
mooted questions as “Has a woman a
right to he r husband’s secrets?”, and
“Does love excuse any fight a woman
might make for her happiness?”. It
is one of the most startling gangster
sensations ever filmed, due mainly to
the original plot by Jack Lait, -the
splendid acting by Helen Twelvetrees,
who is supported by Ricardo Cortez,
the wily villain. Several peoplfe are
“put on the spot.” before Helen brings
things .to a perfect conclusion, but
she does it with a genius that makes
the picture outstanding.
, “Susan Lerox.”
Greta Garbo has reached the pin
nacle of her career of performances
in “Susan Lenox”. It was a happy
and wise decision to team the glori
ous Garbo and engaging Clark Gable.
Thi s new-comer is right at th e top of
the ladder in the estimation of fans,
and his work in • the Garbo picture
would seem to assure his early bid for
stardom. Greta Garbo is—of course—
magnificent, and her superb acting,
together with her romantic ipterludes
with Clark Gable, form the highlight
of “Su-an Lenox.” Many hav e ac
claimed it the picture of the year.
“Monkey Bunir.?s8.”
Four men in a boat, encored for

sense than you knew was possible.
In “Monkey Business” you share the
mad and merry capers of a troup of
appealingly goofy human beings, who

“Transatlantic.”
' r *.
The (larin# and recklessness of Am-
ericcfliFouth are made surprisingly real
by that maste r actor, Edmun'de Lowe,
the most subtle man of the screen, in
“Transatlantic.” Sailing seas of ad
venture, charted by mercenary de
sires, lighted by the fires of love,
“Transatlantic” bring? into cne glor
ious whole an exciting mystery of a
mid-ocean theft, of a floating palace
peopled by intriguers constantly at
each other’s throat.. Edmund Lowe is
capably supported by lovely Lois
Moran.
