MANY NATIONS'NOW
USE WOMEN SPIES
Strong Heart and Baby Face
Are Needed.
Paris.—Half of (he spies In "Europe
today wear skirts. Spying Is a profes
sion to which many stenographers as
pire, and the only stock in trade
needed Is a stony' heart. Impervious
to love and tlattery, heauty and the
face of a baby doll, to throw the po
lice off the track.
Many of the chiefs of Europe’s un
derground espionage services believe
that where secrets of national defense
are to be wormed from young officers,
one hluck-eyed, raven haired beauty~
can do more good than a platoon of
men well versed in the art of draw
ing fortitlehtlons in invisible ink.
It is true also that other chiefs feel
as strongly tim <t#her way. -These hold
that no woman is aide to keep a secret
in nil circumstances. They employ no
women spies in responsible posts. To
take care of other nations" women
spies they use personable young men.
These young men seek and make love
to them. The theory Is that when the
woman lets herself fall In love she
tells all she knows.
The Fatal Mistake.
Tims these men use the love lure
precisely as do the women spies.
Spying seems to he more natural to
women than to men v especially to
women who like Intrihue. Ever since
Mata Ilnri went to work for’Germany
during the World war aiid used her
art of making “men fall in love with
her, she has been looked upon as
queen of the spies.
Main Hurl, like other women spies,
mode the fatal mistake of falling In
love herself, and before long she was
caught and faced the firing squad in
the moat of Vincennes castle.
I Miring and Just Iteforo the war
Germany used many women to get in
formation. England, in the few years
before the war, was swamped \.Vttb

Westminster; T. M. Metts, Greenwood;
C. B. Evans, Abbeville, and J. H.

demonstrations there was a check

both plots.
The 1930 returns show that the av

Oconee County. On one of his five-

One of the strangest of these was March he top-dressed the oats with

Emma Stubert, woman companion,
who changed over and quit her spy
Job with the central powers and be
came one of the host spies in the
service of the allies. Five spies of
the central powers went to the exe
cution post upon evidence turned up
by the goveruness.
Since the war,-no-woman spy has
been more successful than m French
woman, Mart he Moreuil,’ before her
arrest. She worked for the love of
the game and for her lover. Paid
dartcer In a Paris dance hall, she
agreed to visit French, aviation cen

new bombardment planes for a group
of young Englishmen, William Fisher,
John Leather, and Ernest Philipps.
Although she had never been In an

aviation fields and asked to he al
lowed to practice parachute Jumping.
Friendly soldier pilots took her for
rides high over the Held and allowed
her to leap with her parachute.
Once established, she struck up
friendships and was able to pass to
her English friends an enormous
amount of information, drawings, and
documents before the band was ar
rested. Then she took her prison sen
tence of six nionlhx with closed lips.
150 pounds of Chilean nitrate of soda.
On this plot he made 56^ bushels, an
increase of 26\ bushels over the plot
where.no top-dresser was used. Mr.
Bowen’s results and those of other
farmers over the State simply verify
by practical application the recom
mendations of the Experiment Sta
tion.
The returns for .the three years,
1928-30, from the 48 demonstrations
show an average increase in the
yield of oats -of 20.7 bushels per acre
on plots where 150 pounds of Chilean
nitrate of soda ha s been applied as a
top-dresser. The cost of the increase
was 13,3 cents per bushel.
