JESUS TEMPTED
LESSON TEXT—lAike
’ OOLDKN TEXT—For in that he hlm-
«»«U hath suffered being tempted, he
• ia able to aiiccor them that ^ are
tempted.
PRIMARY TOPIC—Jesua True to
Oort
JUNIOR TOPIQ—Jeans True to God.
INTERMEDIATE AND SENIOR TOP
IC—How to Overcome Temptation.
YOUNG PEOPDK AND ADULT TOP-
‘ IC—Conflicting Ideals.
j I. Tha Place (v. 1).
. Th<» \vlltIenl«iH of .ludeA. The first
- mtin, Adam, was tempted In a pardon
with the most pleasant surroundings.
The second man, Jesus Christ, was
tempted In a barren wilderness, sur-
roundtM] by wild beasts (Murk 1:13).
Adam shamefully failed. Involving the
whole race In ruin (Korn. 5:12);
Christ gloriously triumphed, bringing
Justification of life ns a free gift upon
nil who believe (Rom. 5:18).
II. The Purpose (v. 1);
Christ was led Into the wilderness
by the Holy Spirit, His temptation
was Messianic. Men today are hot
tempted as be was, but the same
methods are employed by the Evil
One. The time bad come for the Re
deemer to enter upon Ids mediatorial
work. Therefore, he weht from the
place of anointing and heavenly rec
ognition as the Son of God to meet
and to spoil the enemy of God and
men (Heb. 2:14).
1. It was not a preparation for Ids
work hut rather his first conflict with
the enemy. In Ids baptism we have
(he symbolic act of the dedication of
himself to the work of redemption
i through the work of the cross.
2. It was not to see if Christ would
stand fast, as to whether he would fail
nnder the most crucial test. Being the
eternal Son of God, incorpnrufed with
the perfect humanity, sin and failure
. were Impossible.
. 3. It was to exhibit Christ ias an
object upon which we may rest our^
faith with unshaken confidence. He
came as the second man, the head of a
new race, the very source of its life.
The temptation was, therefore, a dem
onstration of the inseparahleness of
the divine and human natures in the
Incarnation.
• III. Ths Msthod (vv. 2-12).
Christ as the world’s Redeemer sus
tained a threefold relation—Son of
Man, Son of God, and Messiah. There
fore, Satan made each one a ground
of attack.
1. As Son of Man (vv. 2-4). Satan
made his first assault upon him as a
man by appealing to the Instinct of
hunger. Salon urged him to use Ills
divine power to convert a stone into
bread. The temptation was In satis
fying a right hunger in a wrong way.
To have yielded in this case though
his hunger was desperate would have
been to renounce the human limita
tions which he had taken for our sakes.
To do right in a wrong way is to sin.
2. As Messiah (vv. 5-8). Here the
m
from date hereof, otherwise you will of Mrs. C. R. Kelly, on the east by
be barred from partjc>pati*gr4& the
assets of the said Mutual Trading
Company.

.MAGICIANS APPEAR AT
BARNWELL HIGH SCHOOL
“TH,E &ELWYNS”, entertainers in
music, and “things mysterious,” are
appearing in the’ Barnwell High
School auditorium here tomorrow
(Friday) evening at 8:00 p. m. This
performance promises to be one of
the best educational as well as most
enjoyable programs ever presented
here. Mr. and Mrs. Selwyn will pre
sent a. complete series of amazing and
mystifying tricks in the art of magic.
This attiaction comes highly recom
mended, the Selwyns having appeared
in a number of southern cities and the
leading systems of South Carolina.
All have nothing but praise for the
magician’s act. Strange effects and
curious situations arise in the pro
gram, and animal pets of all sorts
are used, while yards and-yards of
silk s and ribbons are drawn form ap
parent vacancy. The Selwyns carry
bne of the latest startling mysteries
known as “THE EGYPTIAN PRIN
CESS ILLUSION.” This effect come s
originally from Egypt and leaves
everyone guessing. Novelty music
and imitations of nature are inter
spersed in the program. Everyone is
promised an evening of real enjoyment
in an art of entertaining which can
not be broadcast over the radio. ~
This entertainment is being brought
here under the auspices of the Tenth
Grade headed by Miss Anne Mood,
and the profits realized will be used
for financing the Junior-Senior recep
tion to be given later. Something out
of the ordinary i s an arrangement

offered to surrender untq him the
world if he would adopt Ids methods,
would worship him. The force of this
temptation was In the. fact that the
kingdoms of the world are Christ's hy
God's covenant with him. Satan has
forfeited his right to rule. God’s meth
od by which Jesus was to possess the
world was his sacrificial death on the
cross. .
3. As the Son of God (vv* P-12).
Here Satan tries to induC'e Christ to
presume upon God’s care. He quoted
n Messianic psalm to induce him to
so act. To do the sitectacuiar thing
in order to get notice is to fall Into
Satan's temptation. For Jesus to have
placed himself in danger In order to
get God’s special help In delivering'
him would have been to sin. To test
God as to whether he will keep Ids
promise Is the greatest distrusi.
IV. Christ's Defense <yv. 4, 8. 12).
It was (lie Word of God. He met
and repulsed the enemy with “it Is
writteji.” In the most crucial hour of
the world’s history Christ quoted from
the Book of Deuteronomy, which the
nitlonalists of the day reject as not
1‘eing fully Inspired.
„ V. The Issue (v. 13).
.Satan was vanquished. He could |
not stand against God’s Word.

Enmity With God
Friendship of the world is enmity
with God because the leadership of
the world is directly against godli
