I. A Godly Husband and Wife
(Luke 1:5-7).
The nnme Zucharins means “Jeho
vah hath remembered," and the name
Elisabeth means “A covenant maker."
1. When they lived (v. 5).
“In the days of Herod the king
They lived in a day when godlessness
was rife. The priesthood was corrupt,
and ihe ruling classes taost wicked.

In this power lie was to prepare the
people for the coming of the Savior,
and the salvation which he was to
bring.
4. Zacharius asking for a sign (vv.
18-23).
Although the aged priest was ear
nestly praying for the salvation of
Israel, the gracious promise of the
angel which was the beginning of that
salvation staggered his faith. The
angel gave him a sign. Because he
refused to praise God In faith for this
gracious promise. God caused his
tongue to be silent until the promise
was fulfilled. God wants us to believe
his promises no matter how contrary
to reason they may seem.
III. The Promise Fulfilled (Luke
1:57-C4).

Schnell, young scientist, claims n for
mula to produce light as bright as the
sun’s without the use of electricity.
His Invention nssertedly Is composed

reproduction of the sun itself.
“For," lie said, "the compounds
which make up my Invention are
composed of the same atoms as the
sun. In some ways <ve even have
the sun cheated for we can produce
a hot or a cold ray as we desire."
Doctor Schnell said the test of
burning wood by a magnifying glass
hud been equally successful with the
sun and with his invention.
The Inventor said he had Illumi
nated entire rooms with his mysteri
ous light and has cortducted other
tests to the entire satisfaction* of
noted scientists.
Doctor Schnell disclosed that he be
lieves his Invention eventually will
eliminate nil forms 'of outdoor elec
trical signs and lights, Illuminate
homes, ci>ok food and assist medical
work, through its X-ray qualities.

With these variations in mind one
of the very first temptations which
arises is to take an acre and calcu-
culate the number of hills in each
section. There aie about 44,000 sq.
ft. in an acre. In 24 inch spacing
and 3 inch drill there can be made
about 220 rows of 100 ft. each or
220 times 400 equals 88,000 hills.
In 40 inch spacing and 8 inch drill
the acre will only hold 132 rows of
100 ft. ength or 132 timeg 150 equals
19,800 hills. There are more than
four times as many hills in the Vir
ginia acre than there are in the
South Carolina acre.
How then, can one account for the
fact that in South Carolina 40 pounds
of seed are recommended to the acre
and the Eastern Shore uses only from
50 to 60 to the acre? In the first
place the South Carolina farmer
probably plants an average sized
lx*an, w’hile the Virginia canner is
supplying himself or his farmers with
small beans. The midget and baby

Again, the South Carolina farmer is
planting more seed to each hill.
At this point we would like to he
more accurately informed. We will
have to assume that the average bush
el of seed used in South Carolina con
tains 72,000 beans and that the full
40 pounds recommended art actually
planted to the acre. Thi* amounts to
about 50.000 seed per acre and an

ry. Let us compare the normal yields
in the two States.
Average Yields.
The yield in Virginia are measured
in the number of cases per acre. A
cc*.se is tw r o dozen cans of No. 2’s.
There are 12 to 13 ounces in a can.
The standard is 20 pounds of beans
to the case. Another standard rule
is 200 bushels of pods gives 1,200
quarts of beans which make s 2,400
cans of 100 cases.
A canner averaging 200 bushels of
pods and 100 cases to the acre will
become wealthy at the prices prevail
ing since 1900. They make good pro
fits on less than this.

Many canners speak familiarly of
100 cases to the acre. Four years ob
servation has not disclosed any aver
aging this. Four years is a short
period but one cannot help classifying
100 cases to the acre with South Caro
lina’s bale to the acre. It happens,
even yet, but the figure does not rep-
redbnt an average.
One very successful canner said
that a good year gave him 86 cases to
J(he acre. Another, equally good is
highly pleased with 80 to 85 cases.
They are an optomistic bunch and this
year under seiious drought condi
tions all of them were planning on
30 cases to the acre. The New Jer
sey plant, previously mentioned, was
forced to close down after a series of
years yielding less than 50 cases to
the acre. Their labor costs, however,
were much higher than Virginia and
they paid $17.00 per acre per year
rental on the 2,000 acres under lease.
It is estimated that the year in and
year out average would be 60 cases
to the acre which i s equivalent to 133
bushelg pods.
The Northern farmer and canner
harvests his lima bean field of 100
acres in one sweep. The South Caro
lina farmer has at least two distinct
crops on the same bushes. He usual
ly takes three pickings off the first
crop and two or more pickings there
after. #
Most of the South Carolina farmers
who had the last yeai’s experience
back of them took off slightly more
than 1 ten of pods to the acre for
their first crop. That meant about
65 htishels which is less than one-half
the average yield in Virginia. A few
ran up close to 100 bushels to the
acre for the first crop only. Thi g was
during the latter part of July. Dur
ing the early part of August the
bushes put on another and rather
heavy spiinkling of blossoms. Many
of the blossoms, however, were fall
ing off, do*, oor Northern friends as
sured us, entirely to the dry weather
and has nothing to do with the fertili
zer used, nor the inroads of any pests.
In each case the farmer believed he
would have gotten, had the blossoms
stayed on, at least half as many as he
picked from his first crop. As it was,
reports coming in now, September 18,
show some still picking and doing
very well fiom the second crop.
How many bushels could South
Carolina harvest to the acre by dupli
cating the methods of Virginia; by
30 inch spacing and 3 or 4 inches to
the drill, and one seed to the hill; by
using 50, perhaps 60 pounds of seed
to the acre; by fertilizing with 700 to
1,000 pounds of 5-10-5 or 5-8-4; by
leaving the pedg on until the bushes
are full and then harvesting all at
once. Perhaps it would be best to
approach these methods slowly except
for a patch on the side, unless they
were directed by one of the Eastern
Shore canners of long experience.
More Pods on South Carolina Bushes.
A field at Walterboro, S. C., on July
1, during the first pick first crop, in
which 3 bushes were selected at ran
dom, showed 30 pods, 36 podg and 46
pods, and a great many blossoms be
sides. The field apparently averaged
between these figures ag the bushes
showed an even growth. There was
cne p6d of white beans in the bunch
showing less than 1 per cent maturity.
Two days later, 2 bushes picked at
random gave 37 and 57 pods respec
tively with about 4 per cent white.
Some hills had 2 bushes and some only
had one. The average was 3 beans to
the pod with about a s many having
4 bean s as had 2. The first two pick
ings yielded better than 100 bushels.
At Cape Charles, Va., on August 11,
a field running from 4 to 8 per cent
real white and about 30 per cent
whitish sh wed the bushes running
from 5 pods to 25 pods. The bushes
were of a mote even growth in this
field than in many neighboring fields.
There was a good head of blossoms.
Not any of the pods had 3 beans, most
of them were 2 and gome had one.
Germination could not have been over
75 per cent. The crop had a quarter
inch rain the night before and needed
a half inch at least. They had had
practically no rain since being plant
ed in the latter part of June. It was
said that the further absence of rain
would cause this field to only run 30
cases to the acre, 60 bushelg with
from 40 to 60 per cent of them white.
This appeared rather optimistic al
though pei haps 24 inch rows, 3 inch
drilling, one seed to the hill and 700
pounds of 5-10-8 will account for R.
On July 2nd, a scant acre at Fair
fax wai jyst beginning to form pods.
There was an average of 15 to 25
young pods to th£ bush and many
blossoms. 400 pounds of 10-5-7 was
used. Beans were in 3 foot row s with
corn in between. There had been no
cultivation. The first two pickings
yielded slightly moie than a ton of
pette,—between 60 and 70 bus|hels,
and the busheg were full of booms
when plowed under,
v A seventy-five acre field at Ross-
ville, Va., on August 11th, also had
from 15 to 25 pods to the bush. The
beans, however, ran over 20 per cent
white which show s that the crop was
more matured than at Fairfax. It
also had plenty of blossoms, and most
of the pods had 3 beans. The owner
of this field hoped to get 40 ( caseg to
the acre thi s year which' would be
80 bushels, and was figuring upon
getting 60 per cent green and 40 per
cent white. It doesn’t look as though
he will make it. He used 30 inch
rows and 3 inch drill, and on an aver
age year figures an 80 per cent ger
mination, with hardly 60 per cent this
year. •
Extreme Caro in Grading.
We had hoped to treat here several
more subjects involved in taking the
Henderson Lima Bean all the way
from the seed to the can. We had
also planned upon dealing with the
Alaska pea. But this article, is get-

It is impossible, however, to think
cf vegetables, either fresh or canned,
witout coming into the extreme im
portance of proper grading.
The Northern packer of quality
lima beans whether on the Eastern
Shore, in New York State or in Illi
nois gives ag much attention to the
grading as to any other phase of the
business.-* The whites are first sepa
rated from the greens and then the
greens are separated into at least 3
size£. On August 12, the midget
greens brought $2.35 per dozen cans,
the small greens $2.15; the ordinary
greens $1.70; and the white from $1.00
to $1.10.
Grading usually means quality and
quality not only means price but rep
utation also. Distant markets buy on
reputation. These lima bean fellows
on the Eastern Shore have no problem
in marketing their product.
Mr. W. H. Ramsey of the Seaboard
Air Line Railway returned from the
Rio Grand valley last winter perfect
ly astonished at the thousands of car
loads of vegetables that section was
shipping East. Everything was
graded with extreme care, and label
ed. All interested people returned
from California with the same story.
No better slogan could be adopted
by everyone in South Carolina than,
“Full Pack and High Grade."
