Ross, of Bamberg, and Denmark, who moved to South Caro lina from Dover, Delaware to engage in the growing and shipping of iodine vegetables, has returned from a trip to the North bringing back with him orders for next season for a yield from BOO acres planted in cucumbers, 300 hundred acres of peppers, nine million tomato plants, 50,000 cases of canned string beans and 50,000 cases of canned lima beans. Mr. Ross told the office of the South Carolina nat ural resources commission that the or ders for the 100,000 cases of canned goods means the 1 establishment by him at some point in this State not yet definitely determined of a can ning factory with a capaicity of 2,000 to 2,500 cases per day. Diying the past season Mr. Ross shipped from Denmark and Bamberg 4,800,000 tomato plants, 62 carloads of cucumbers, 24 carloads of mixed veg etables, and 29 truckloads and three carloads of asparagus. In addition to the 6,000,000 tomato plants for which he has received or ders, he expects to ship some 6,000,000 more, bringing the total to 15,000,006 South Carolina tomato plants, which will go to New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. The 500 acres of cucum bers and 300 acres of peppers, for which he has received orders, have been sold at a specific price which he says will give a satisfactory profit to the growers with whom he con tracts. It is his intention at this time to process the cucumbers and pep pers and ship them in brine. It is his plan U> make this an adjunct of the proposed canning factory. Under the method of processing, the pickled cu cumbers and peppers would be ship ped in 50-gallon kegs. To Increase Operations. Mr. Ross will continue ,and increase his operations in Bamberg County and adjacent territory in the growing and shipping of fresh vegetables, in addition to the acreage for the pro pcsed caning factory. The markets which he has secured for hi s vegeta bles and canned goods range from Georgia to Chicago, and include, Cleveland, Detroit, Philadelphia, New ’York, Baltimore and Washington. He i* in receipt of a letter from a largv distributor in California asking for the distribution from that point of S;uth Carolina iodine products packed by him. Mr. Ros s said that those whom he had aproached in the Northern mar kets with regard to the purchase of peppers, cucumbers and tomato plant* were enthusiastic to such degree that they proffered the advance of both seed and fertilizer for the growing of these crops. With regard to the to mato plants, there is no suggestion that the fruit from these plants ma tured in the soil of another State would contain the South Carolina io dine content. These plants are espe cially desirable on account of their sturdiness and the favorable time at which they may be transplanted. The eager demand which he founnd for South Carolina fresh fiuit s and vege tables an d canned products, he said, was because of their high iodine con tent. Mr. Ross ha s been in the canning and vegetable business all his life. It is recalled that during the World War he reconditioned for the United States goveinment at hi s cannery at Camden, Dela., 18,000,000 pounds of jam which had been shipped from Sydney, Australia. Mr. Ross talked interestingly of the course of the tomato plants shipped during the past season to New Jer sey. They were planted in New Jer sey soil and the fruit was taken into Maryland and packed at Cambridge, Cristfield and Hebron in that State. There was an immense amount of truck shipped this year from Den mark and Bamberg. Among the ship pers, in addition to Mr. Ross, R. A. Goolsby shipped 24 carloads of cu cumbers and six cars of tomatoes; M. C. BrRt 87 cars of cucumbers; W. Cecil Crum 84 cars of cucumbers, 14 cars af peas. 15 cart of erating since moving to South Caro lina. In addition to this machine gun pro tectlon, eight citizens who are expert R#irksmen and possess high powered rifles have formed an organization and will co-operute with the police and the sheriff and his deputies In protecting the hanks.
