in Second Race.
The first primary election in Barn
well County furnished few if any sur
prises. With only one precinct—
Healing Springs—missing, the returns
show that B. S. Moore, Jr., of Barn
well,/has defeated Horace J. Crouch,
ino.iiiLent, of Elko, for the office of
County Superintendent of Education
by a maj^ity of approximately 250,
the vote being Crouch 1,234, Moore
1,474.
Winchester C. Smith, Jr., of Willis-
ton, received an overwhelming majori
ty for the House of Representatives,
his total being more than 1.800 votes.
A second race will be necessary be
tween R. C. Holman, of Barnwell, and
Jas. Arthur Kennedy, of Williaton,
the'-r vote being Holman 1,101 and
Kennedy 1,262.
W. S. Grubbs was elected Magis
trate at Blackville over Paul E. Allen,
by a majority of 58 votes.
M. C. Kitchings defeated R. L.
Wooley, incumbent, for Magistrate at
Williston by a majority of 42 votes.
A second race for Magistrate at
Barnwell will be run between W. P.
Sanders, incumbent, and J. M. Dia
mond.
For Magistrate at Dunbarton, the
run-off is between C. S. Anderson and
R. M. Burckhalter.
Paul H. Sanders, incumbent, ami W.
K. Black will make a second race for
Magistrate at Hilda.
R. B. Harden, incumbent, has appar
ently defeated C. D. Owens for Mag
istrate for Great Cypress township by
a majority of one vote.
More than 2,700 votes w'ere cast in
Barnwell County and the counting
wa* very slow on account of the length
of the State ballot.

Death in Auto' Wreck

When He Lost Control of His

Car Thursday Night.
John B. Sims, colored, was instantly
killed and his companion, a negro
named Hogg, miraculously escaped
serious injury when Sims lost control
of his car Thursday night on Marl
boro Street and dashed into a tree,
Sim/ neck was broken and the auto
mobile wa* completely wrecked.
According to Hogg, Sima was drtv-
inf his car at a high rate of speed
down the Marlboro Street hill, be

A. C. L. Railroad tracks. Seeing an
other car about to fum into the high
way from a side street, the driver ap
plied hig brakes suddenly, causing his
car to swerve across the road and
crash against the tree. The body of
the machine telescoped and when the
negroes were pulled from the wreck
age it was found that Sims was dead,
his neck having been broken by the
terrific impact. Hogg escaped with
only minor injuries. The automobile
wag a practically new Ford closed car.
Giantnc Price Uut.
Midville, Ga.—What farmers can ac
complish through co-operation was
demonstrated here when the Plant
Ginning Company lowered ita price for
gining from 50 cents a hundred to 85
cents. Several days ago, a number of
the largest planter* of this section
signed so agreement to give their cot
ton to any gin that would lower iU
price, and the local gin of which C. B.
Seagvr is manager accepted the offer.
It is expected that other gins here will
follow suit. All gins here have made
sharp increases in the price paid for
seed.

Negro Injured at Kline.
Bill Sanders, colored, of Barnwell,
was seriously injured and a State
Highway Department truck was badly
damaged Saturday when struck by a
Southern Railway passenger train at
a crossing near Kline. The injured
man Was carried to a Columbia hospi
tal.

Saluda, has been renominated for his
fourth term by a majority of 980
votes on the face of unofficial re
turns reveived here Tuesday night.
With only four boxen missing in
Hampton County and one each in
Bamberg and Beaufort, the vote was:

dren of J. C. Williamson, cf the Long
Branch section, were walking about
they found a snake trail across the
road and followed it a few yards
across the field of J. B. Ross, where
they found a five-foot rattle snake
The number of rattles that the snake
had Is not known aa Mr. Williamson
them off when he killed the snake. —

Turpentine Plant Destroyed.
The Barnwell turpentine plant, lo
cated on the Barnwell-Elko highway
in the western part of town, was total-'
ly destroyed by fire of unknown origin
about 1:80 o’clock Tuesday morning.
The blaxe spread rapidly and aa the
plant wa s too far away from the near
est fire hydrant, the volunteer fire
fighters were unable to render any as
sistance. It ia understood that there
was no insurance.
Returns from over the State re
ceived here yesterday (Wednesday)
afternoon show that Senator Cole L.
Blease ia leading James F. Byrnes in
the senatorial contest b ya margin of
10,000 votes, the figurees being Blease
75,657, Byrnes 65,657 and Harris 26,-
142. The combined vote against
Blease ig 91,799 or a majority of 16,-
142.
Olin D. Johnston is leading in the
governor's race with 46.424 votes with
the other candidates in the following
order: Blackwood 85,421, Lever 82,-
678. Williams 26.860, Keith 24.167,
Herbert 13,924, Smoak 8,882. McMa
han 888.
Sheppard ia leading Harley for
lieutenant governor by about 4,000,
while Blackwell, Daniel, Beattie, Hope
and Shea ley have apparently been re
nominated over their opponents for
rotary of state, attorney general,
ptroller general, state superin
tendent of education and commission
er of agriculture, respectively.

James F. Byrnes, former Congress
man from this District, led in Barn
well County Tuesday in the race for
the United States Senate, the vote be
ing Blease 755, Byrnes 1, 178 and Har
ris 711 with all precincts reported.
Harris showed surprising strength by
running only 11 votes behind Senator
Blease, but it was freely predicted af
ter last Friday’s campaign meeting
here that the Anderson solicitor would
get a good vote in the county.
Another surprise ia the race for
State offices was Ashton Williams'
strength in the county, the only avow
ed "wet" running only ten votes be
hind Lever, the leader.
J. E. Harley, of Barnwell, got a
magnificent vote, the result being Har
ley 2,169 and Sbappdrd 675.
W. P. Blackwell got a majority over
Harry D. Calhoun ia this county for
Secretary of State; John M. Daniel
lacked only a few votes of getting a
majority over both of his opponents
for Attorney General, and Louie A.
Seareon received a substantial ma
jority over A. J. Beattie for Comp
troller General.
J. E. Swearingen was riven n plu
rality over James H. Hope and M. M.
Wilkes, the vote being Swearings*
1,476, Hope 964 and Wilkaa 827.
J. W. Shsaley received a majority
over both of hit opponents for Coo**
miaaioner of Agriculture.
