and they would naturally use the
same medium for advertising for bids
in connection with highway and pub
lic building programs that are at
present contemplated. It costs the
taxpayers lots of money to advertise
these items, and we hope our officers
will be able to own their own news-
r papers for these purposes ere long.
It looks like a money-saving scheme
to me.
Hie Human Torch.
TYben the blow torch in the hands
of a mechanic working on a car in
front of a garage suddenly exploded,
the man’s clothing was quickly envel
oped in flames. Panic-stricken and

home of a neighbor who endeavored

The worst thing I ever did in my
life was to put my name on. a few

has matured, cotton went to about
11 cents and the banks had discon
tinued accomodations except to their

a maturity further than “thirty days
after date.” You simply can’t re
main pious if you have to pay for
your religion on the installment plan.

barred the motor car. First intima
tion that the embargo had been lifted
came in an unsolicited testimonial re
ceived by General Motors Export Co.
from the St. Helena Corp. Ltd., im
porters and exporters, who do a flour
ishing business on the Island.

Excerpts from the letter state that
“until the commencement of this
year, mechanical transport was pro
hibited. . . . It is now sanctioned,
however, and we have imported the
first motor lorry that the Island has
seen.
“. . . for the purpose of col
lecting raw material from our plan
tations, and the cartage of prepared
hemp from the mills to the wharf, we
have had to maintain a large amount
of animal transport which in this
island ig very expensive and allows
no comparison with the cost of trans
port by mechanical means. Conse
quently, directly legislation permitted,
we imported a motor lorry as men
tioned, and before doing so we con
sidered . . . the vehicle which
would in our opinion be the most suit
able. Of a large number of vehicles
offered, we concluded that for thq

Atmospheric Phenomenon
Tuesday, September 6, 1881, Is

sons reported a smell of smoke In the
air and this is generally believed to
have been the cause of the peculiar
phenomenon. It is known that exten
sive forest fires were raging In Canada
and in the West. Another suggestion

volcano In the Interior of Labrador;
another that the smoke was derived
from immense peat bogs in Labrador

ing of the Barnwell County Demo
cratic Executive Committee will be
held at the law offices of Brown and
Bush in Barnwell, S. C., next Monday
morning, July 28th, 1930, at ten o’
clock, for the purpose of purging the
club rolls, appointing managers of the
primary election and transacting such
other business as may properly come
before saifl meeting. Candidates
having complaints of irregularities in
the enrollment are invited to appear
before the committee at the above
time and place. As this is one of the
most important meetings of the year,
a full attendance of the executive
committeemen is requested.
