Del., had that question propounded to
him time after time by detectives of
the Brooklyn homicide squad In the
Lath Beach station.
“1 told you I don’t know why.” the
prisoner invariably replied. “1 just
put the gun to the back of his head,
and pulled the trigger.”
“You mean to say you killed your
buddy, and don't know why you did
It?” Acting Lieutenant (’onan asked.
“That’s it exactly,” answered Gal
▼ano. “1 blew his brains out, and to
save my life I don't know why I
did It.”
During the long interrogartion the
young soldier was calm and matter-
of-fact. When the detectives paused,
he read the sports page of a newspa
per. smoked, innumerable ciga
rettes with the air of a person per
fectly at ease and at pence with the
world.
No Motive Founck— —-
Finally the detectives had to be sat
isfied with Galvano’s description of
how he committed a murder without
learning of any motive. He was held
without hail as fugitive from Justice.
The fugitive charges were made
pending the arrival of a formal mur
der complaint from the police of Wil
mington, Del., where the crime was
committed. Galvano is accused in
Wilmington of 'killing Arthur Cline,
twenty-one. a private in Company K.
First Kngineers, at Fort Du Pont.
The two were known os inseparable
friends.
Cline’s body, in civilian clothes, hut
stripped of all valuables and marks
of idriitiflcntion. was found Christ
mas morning by a hunter In a marsh
about three miles north r.f Wilming
ton. Two bullet wounds were In fhe
back of the head.
Wilmington (sillce found flint Cal-

Company B. Alonzo Finery, had left
the fort Christmas eve In an automo
bile owned by Finery. Cline, they
were told, was going to Amsterdam.

Denver, Colo.—Twenty years ago a
bearded and rugged Westerner took a
stub pencil from his pocket, leaned
over the counter of a frontier saloon,
and reproduced from memory a scene
he had witnessed years before in a
theater in Cincinnati.
It was Michael Edward O’Brien,
standing alone inspired by his first
creative mood, while laughter and the
fumes of wltisky filled the room.
In a little while the sketch was fin
ished-even to the bridge across the
Thames. His comrades crowded
around, praising his work, though they
didn’t understand.
Encouraged by Wife.
Today, “Viewing the Oaks,” painted
by O’Brien, hangs in the Denver Art
museum among an exiiibit of the work
of native Colorado artists. ,lt was the
first picture of the exhibit to be sold.
Behind that picture lies the story
of an ordinary hod carrier with a fam
ily to support, who never shirked his
^responsibility and qever became dis
cou raged.
Those few w’ords of approbation
which Ids comrades had spoken to him
of his drawing on the bar spurred him
on. His wife encouraged him. al
though she was busy with the house
hold.
At nights the hod carrier, noted for
feats of strength when lie was a
young man, would go to Ids home in
Denver’s most unpretentious residen
tial district and for hours then his
work-worn hands would yield to the
Imaginative power of ids inner self.
Paints From Memory.
Because he was forced to work at
night many of the tints were not
what they should he, and daylight
found his work done in vain. He
worked on them, however, until they
were perfected.
O’Brien never had an education for
a background. He paints mostly from
memory, which fact, it is said, is re
sponsible for the unusual degree of
Imaginativeness found in his pictures.
Occasionally, Ids wife says, be goes off-
to the mountains, but always tears up
his sketches when he comes hack and
paints his scenes from memory.
A few of his pictures have been sold,
and these funds have l»een a genuine
relief from the poverty that dogged
him for so long.

Galvano added, another automobile
came down the road. At his direction,
the prisoner said. Emery starred the

Cline to avoid suspicion.
Later, lie continued, he nnd Emery
removed the body from the car to the
marsh, to<vk about $20 Cline had. then
removed all Identification marks.
Galvano denied he was drunk when
he shot Cline. “1 had a couple of
brinks," he said, "but I wasn’t stewed.”
