Over the Radio.
Shreveport, La., Jan. 25.—The
voice that roars nightly out of KW’KH
comes from a man who is not nearly
so ferocious as he sounds.
William K. Henderson, the “Hello
World” broadcaster, actually is a
friendy, mild manneted man.
It is only when he gets before the
microphone in his studio, his “as
bestos den” as he calls it, that he
tells'the world in plain language what
he thinks.
During the presidential campaign
he filled the air with harsh accusa
tion against Herbert Hoover and now
he has turned his sharp tongue on
chain stores.

HAVE you ever watched some of Barnwel’s
citizens go riding off away from Barnewll to do
their shopping? Have you ever watched them
come riding back, loaded up with supplies? Have
you ever, while you watched, wondered why they
passed up your stores right here in Barnwell?
Sure, you have. So have all of us, whose first
and deepest interest is in Barnwell.
i- Yes, we’ve watched. And we’ve wondered.
And we’ve felt badly about ^he fact that these gotod
citizens of Barnwell chose to shop outside of Barn
well.
It isn’t that you merchants of Barnwell don’t
offer shopping means just as good as those of the
stores in the nearby bigger towns. No, that’s not
at all the reason. Your merchandise is just as good.
Your service, too, is every bit as good. Maybe
better. :*
One reason is that the nearby bigger towns
do a better job of attracting s6me of Barnwell’s
citizens to their stores.
the manufacturers whose goods you are trying to
sell, as well.
Your immediate job, as you can well see, is to
get into your local, home newspaper the advertis
ing aid of the manufacturers' whose goods are on
your shelves. And you can help get this aid easily
enough.^ * ' . **
After all, merchandise can be sold only in ratio
to the amount of selling effort expended. Adver
tising is selling effort. It performs all the func
tions of selling but that of supplying the personality
which the merchant himself dees.
One of these days, maybe today, you’ll be
visited by the salemen of the manufacturers whose
.g0.Qds,,y.fi.U stock-*. Whanavep they come,—interest
them in Barnwell. 'Interest them so that they stay
interested. Interest them so that they’ll want to
interest their sales .managers.
TOnce you’ve injected this interest into the
salesmen, it will spread. And spreading it will
prove extremely helpful in bringing into your local,
!
$
Your job, then, you mer
chants of Barnwell is to do
some attracting of your own.
L-
Puzzled wondering won’t
do it. Neither will mere
talk. But advertising will.

THIS newspaper has joined
