Maxwell Bros., of Augusta, have an attractive advertisement on page seven this week in which they urge their customers to “make this a Furniture Christmas** and offer special prices to that I end. - ! ! ♦ , Sacred Concert Enjoyed. Children of Holland, Belgium /and parts of Germany have their annual holiday, closely cornesponding to our Christmas, on December 6, celebrated as St Nicholas Day. In fact, our le gend of Santa Claus is derived from the legend of St. Nicholas, who was fancied as driving reindeer bringing presents to good children. There is supposed to have been a real St Nicholas, however, born about the year 800, who became a bishop of the early church in Asia Minor. He it reputed to have been a man of great piety and generosity, who gave his in heritance to the poor. He also is said to have'performed numerous miracles, including the bringing to life of three youths who had been murdered and salted down by an innkeeper with whom they had taken lodgings. But there is no mention of him in the writings of his contemporary church fathers, and the accounts later given wide credence did not appear until centuries after his supposed ac tivities occurred. . Strange aa it may seem, his name became very promi nent during the Middle Ages, and has persisted until the present tame. He is known as the patron saint of Russia, of children, of travelers, and, oddly enough, of thieves. However legendary St. Nicholas may be, he is very real to the boys and g<rl R who look forward to his annual coming, for, as an immigrant from Holland has said: “St. Nicholas comes and fills our shoes, after he has taken out the grain which we put there for hi s reindeer." The. Dead Statesmen. The sacred concert held at the Barn well Baptist Church last Sunday even ing was thoroughly enjoyed, a large crowd being in attendance. Many out- of-town people were also present. A silver offering wa* taken at the close of the program, which is to be used for the benefit of the organ fund. Banquet for Football Team. The members of the Barnwell High School football team were tendered a banquet one night last week at the Kennimue Country Club by a number of local business men. Short talks were made by several of the hosts and at the conclusion of an elegant turkey dinner with all (fie trimmin*s, the boys wer^ presented with miniature silver footballs in token of apprecia tion for their efforts in giving the school a winning team tiys year. »- Cotton Picker Displayed. The American cotton picker, a ma chine which {• said to enable the average man to pick from three to four times as much cotton per day than is done by the ordinary hand picking method, is now on display in Columbia. The machine, operated by a one horse power gasoline engine, is only two feet wide, five and one-half feet long and weighs 290 pounds. It will operate on an average of one gallon of. gasoline per day. Two revolving spindles, rotating in opposite directions, snatch the cotton from the burs. Very little trash is carried through the tubes which ex tend back to the container. Actual tests, it is claimed, show that the .cotton pu kcA by the machine is much cleaner than that picked by hand. Suction is used only to carry the cot ton to the containei^ufter it has been taken from the burs by the spindles. Operated by two men the picker gathers from four rows, two for each man. It is pulled along the row, not by the power of the engine, but by the men that are operating it. This if made easy by the ball bearing wheels and the smallness of the entire ma chine. The container holds 100 pounds and when filled rs very easily detached that another may lie put in its place with in a few seconds. To Prewcit “Miss Topsy Turvy.” Within a few weeks the United States has lost by death three states men of unusual ability and prominence —Senator Burton, of Ohio, Secretary of War Good, and Senator W'arren, of Wyoming. Mr. Burton represented Ohio in Congress for many years, both in the House and in the Senate, during which time he labored with conspicious suc cess for the development of the nation’s inland waterways, and was especially - well versed in monetary matters and foreign affairs. He was in his 78th year at the time of his aieath. Secretary Good was a native of Iowa and served his home district in Congress from 1909 to 1921, rijpingjto the chairmanship of the committee on appropriations. He resigned from Congress to practive law in Chicago until his apointment as secretary of War by President Hobver, in whose campaign he had taken a prominent part Mr. Good was an organizer of great ability, and an able politician in the best sense pf the term.. He died at 63. Senator Wirren had served longer in the United States Senate than any other man in the history of the nation, lacking only a few weeks of 37 years. Ha wag chairman of the Senate com- on appropriations and member of the military and public buildings ittee. He was the first State governor of Wyoming, having served aa territorial governor prior to its ad mission aa a State. He was a Civil War veteran, and had won the Con gressional medal of honor for gallan try in battle.
