Thaaksgiriaf Day.
The first Thanksgiving Day observe*
in America was that proclaimed by
’ Governor Bradford of Plymouth colony
1 in 1621, the year following the landing
of the Pilgrims. During colonial
days similar observances were held
on various occasions.

the early history of the Republic such
obnarvances were irregular, and the
several States generally set their own
dates for holding them.
It was not until 1864, under Presi
dent Lincoln, that the last Thursday
in November was settled upon as
Thanksgiving Day throughout the
United States.
The fixing of thig date is, said to
hnve been largely due to the efforts
of Mrs. Sarah J. Hale, an American
author, who began agitating for a
uniform annual date about 1840. Each
your ahe wrote to all State governors
•aking that they name the last Thurs
day in November, and gradually they
fall in with the idea.
On the Pilgrims’ first Thanksgiving
Day wild turkey formed the chief con-
atituent of the feast, and ever since
turkey has been inseparably associat-
ad with the day’s observance.
No Lack of Words.
, How often do we find difficulty in
'thinking of just the right word to e*.
a cat tain idea ? Even fhe grest-
ast writers must often stop to weigh
their words in order to hit upon *he
most appropriate one, while few spank
ers can observe all the nicit'es of ex-
lion without writing out their
•peaches and memorizing them before
hand.
These difficulties sxe not due to any
lack of words in the English language,
however. Possibly it may be a result
of our having too many to choose
from. The latest unabridge i diction-
*ries contain more than 400,000 words,
and the list is increasing constantly.
Noah Webster's first dictionary,
published in *829^ contained only about
TIMMO words; the ed tion o* 1864 in-
114,000; that of 1890 about 175,-

Statistics are not very entertaining,
as a rule, but a comparison of how
people of different sections of the
county save and spend is rather inter
esting.
Based on figures compiled by the
Department of Commerce, a tabulation
has been made of the proportionate
amounts represented by savings de
posits and automobiles owned in var
iou, sections of the United States.
It is shown that the New England
States have 16.56 per cent of the
savings, but only 6.07 per cent of the
automobiles of the country; middle
Atlantic States, 35.71 per cent of the
savings and 25.25 per cent of the
automobiles; west north central
States, 9.70 and 16.61; south Atlantic,
6 and 8.59; past south central 2.30 and
41.02; west south central, 1.91 and
8.35; mountain, 1.55 and 3.53; Pacific,
8 22 and 10.71.
These figures appear to indicate the
gieatcr thriftines* of the East,* as
compared with the West and South.
Whether one section or another is
happier because of the tendency to
save or spend is difficult to deter
mine. Some folks contemplate a sav
ing, account with great satisfaction;
others fill up the old gasoline buggy
and cast care to the winds. It all de
pends on one’s point of view.

The Schedules for Chest Clinics.
Announcement has been made in
these columns of the Chest Clinics that
would be held in this couaty. These
will be held as follows: On Decem
ber 3rd, which is Tuesday, the whites
will be examined in the Blackville
High School from 9:30 a. m. till 12:30
p. m. On the same date the colored
will be examined from 2:00 till 4:00
p. m. in Miller’s School building. On
Wednesday, December 4th, an ex
amination for whites will be held at
the WHlitton-EIko High School build
ing from 9:30 a. m. till 12:30 p. m.
In the afternoon an examination will
be held in Barnwell at the Court House
from 9:30 a. m. till 12:30 p. m„ for
whites, and in the same place from
2:00 till 4:00 p. m. for the colored.
Dr. Leo F. Hall, of Columbia, who
is a specialist in the diagnosis of
tuberculosis will be sent down by the
State Anti Tuberculosis Association
to make these examinations. He will
be assisted by Miss Virginik Ander
son who is now doing public health
nursing in the county. The work is
paid for by the public health nursing
service of the county from funds rais
ed from the Red Cross Roll Call and
the Christmas Seal Sale.
Only those are invited to avail
themsejve s of these clinics who have
been %sociated with cases of tuber-
culosi^or who have reason to believe
they have it. Tuberculosis esn be
cured, provided it is taken in time.
