Aa bin balance on one foot became teem perfect, be tried other sports, and often to hla own surprise, learned Col. Harry D. Calhour, iodine cham pion of these parti, has bit upon a new Idea to be used in exploiting South Carolina grown iodine content products. Two ideas, to be exact, but each arrived at at the same time. Col. Calhoun has mailed five pounds of scuppemong grapes and a bundle cf sassafras roots to Dr. Roe E. Remington at the medical college ir. Charleston, for analysis as to their iodine cortent. “It is our idea to commercialize scuppernong grape juice and sassa fras tea if you find iodine properties in these two products,” Colonel Cal houn has written Dr. Remirgton. According to Dr. William Weston, chairman of the food analysis commis sion, scupperrong grapes and sassa fras had not been considered for their iodine content until Colonel Calhoun suggested the idea and it is highly probable that each product contairs a high percentage of iodire, Dr. Weston said. Col. and Mrs. Harry D. Calhour, operators of the Denmark hotels are among Bamberg Courty’s best" boost ers. Tha News and Courier editorially says that the hotel carries a sign in the dining room reading thus: “All vegetables, fruits, ar.<i cereals served in this dinirg room are native grown and are rich in iodine properties.” That is the spirit. We do. a lot of boasting about things that are fre quently trival but now that we have something that is really worthwhile, take off the bridle ard tell everybody about it. Show your own faith in South Carolina vegetables by eating them yourself, and serving them to your friends at your table. The News and Courier adds this comment: “When South Carolir.ians shall consume more of their own pro ducts, they will have less cause to la ment the migratory dollars that are sent other States for stuffs hat are produced within the State, and are of high quality.”—Bamberg Her ald. Air Flivver Coming. Within five yean a business man living in a distant suburb many board his one-passenger air flivver, fly to the city and alight on his office roof. Returning at right he may land in his own yard with ease and safety. Such is the prediction of conservative pilots and engineers. This may happen in less than five (rears if plans fer the commercial manufacture of a new machine called the autogyro are carried out. Invent ed by Juan de la Cierva, a Spaniard, the autogyro is fitted with an ordinary air plane motor and propeller, but in addition has revolving wirgs in a sort of windmill arrar gemert which* enables it to sustain, itself in the air at low speed, thus permitting it to rise or land in the apace of an ordinary ten. i s court * The revolving wings are said to give the machine stability in flight, besides making A crash to earth almost im- poss ole, even though the pilot should entirely lose control. It is declared that - it “flies like an airplane " but settler to earth like a parachute.” An American company is now per fecting a design for immediate com mercial production. If the claims of its promoters are made good, the au togyro may soon revolutionize short distance passenger traffic.—Herald and News. advertise in & The People- Sentinel.
