sick for the past few weeks, is slowly

week-end with Mr. and Mrs. H. M.
Mixson.
Teddy Plexico left this week for a
visit to the new plant of the Goodyear
Tire and Rubber Company at Gads
den, Ala.

Sold at Auction June 18th-19th
A representative large mill located in one of the most prominent textile
sections of New England. A mill which, according to the auctioneers’ adver-
tismenfc, has “machinery and equipment including 170,000 ring spindles and
is complete for carding, combing and spinning American and Egyptian
cotton yams in counts from 8 to 80. It is a high speed mill with modern ma
chinery throughout. The machinery and equipment of Mill No. 1 was ail
purchased new in and since 1911. Of Mill No. 2, in and since 1917. The
mill was in successful operation up to the time of the textile strike in New
Bedford about a year ago.” The illustration below will give an idea of its
magnitude and its modem buildings.

Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Dicks and chil
dren were visitors in Gastonia and
Charlotte, N. C., last week.
Mrs.Robt. A. Patterson and little
son have returned to Barnwell after a
visit to relatives at McColl.
The friends of J. M. Diamond will
regret to learn that he was taken* to
a Columbia hospital early Monday
morning for treatment.

taught school in Harrisburg, Va., the
past sessior, is spending the summer

Dr. L. T. Claytor, Monroe Morris
and Harry Anderson left Tuesday
morning for a visit to the former’s

Miss Helen Calhoun returned to
Barnwell Saturday morning from
Thomasville, Ga., where she taught
school the past session.
The many friends of E. W. Holman
will be glad to know that he is steadi
ly improving, ard hope to see him on
the streets in a short while.
Mrs. Edgar Loyns, of Elloree, Miss
Erma Levkoff, Miss Rosa Harris and
Melvin Levkoff, of Columbia, are the
guests of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Mazurs-
ky.
This is but one of the large number of New England mills that have been
forced to shut down following labor disturbances. Antagonistic labor and
adverse legislation have contributed toward greatly reducing the number of
spindles in place in New England. The U. S. Department of Commerce shows
a reduction in spindles from 19,001,661 irl February 1923, to 15,008,764 in
April 1929—a decline of 3,992,897 spindles.
What has become of the thousands of workers who earned their living
at the mills which were forced to close ? Does the future bold in store such
industrial tragedies for South Carolina?
