Nitrate of Soda Imports Show Increase
R EPORTS from Chile indicate that
the current nitrate year which
ends June 30th will be one of
tfie most prosperous In the hletory of
the nitrate of soda Industry. Approxi
mately 3,000,000 tons of this fertilizer
material will be exported to all parts
of the world during the twelve months.
Consumption of nitrate of soda in
this country has increased 65 per cent
during the fiscal year. f Sales made for
delivery to the UniteduStates prior to
June 30th total 1,116,000 tons as com
pared wltl^ 754,277 tons In 1926-1927.
Europe, #fHch for a time cut down
on her buying of Chilean nitrate, has
again become a heavy consumer and
her imports increased 47 per cent
“ Herbert C. Rrewer, Director of the
Chilean Nitrate of Soda Educational
Bureau in this country, flays the re
markable strides made by nitrate of
soda furnirh proof of the satiflfaction
it has given farmers everywhere, but
particularly in the South, where it ia
used chiefly on cotton and corn.

Poultrymen Find Early

Clemson Plan of Early Hatching, Cars*
ful Brooding and Plentiful Feed
Put Eggs on High Market
r The early bird, when reared without
disease or pest, lays eggs for the
high-price market, but the bird that
catches worms early in life stands
mtle chance of maturing in time for
the biggest prices or of ever laying
heavily, according to members of the
Poultry Division of t^lemson College.
Experiences of many poultrymen in
South Carolina bear out this opinion.
Altogether too many poultrymen ha^tch
late and when the birds wait until the
peak of the market is passed to begin
laying and then fail to lay their right
ful allowance of eggs because they
were weakened with worms while
young and weak. L. G. Neel, exten
sion poultry specialist at Clemson
College finds. The Clemson plan of
brooding is designed to eliminate these
faults. The Atlantic' Coast Line-
Clemson .College Livestock Develop
ment Train will carry a Clemson type
brooder house and brood a flock of
chicks by the Clemson plan while tour
ing South Carolina.
Since the hen’s natural laying sea
son comes in spring and early summer
eggs are plentiful at that time and
scarce in early fall and winter. So al
lowing 6 or 8 months for Ijted or Rock
Pullets to mature,-thoie'j»Hatched in
March wHl be laying before November,
as will Leghorns or light breeds
hatched in April. Surplus cockerels
wttl also reach the best prices on the
broiler market. Later birds fun into
hot weather that slows growth, with
more prevalent parasites and both
broilers and eggs miss early good
prices. It is furthermore a w r ell-
knowm fact that most mature chick
ens have worms. Chicks are gener
ally brooded with the Q,ld flocks^r on
ground that bid birds have ranged
over and dropped w'orm eggs, on, and,
becoming infested while weak, they
never develop vigor necessary for
heavy laying. Those that mature un
infested are not greatly damaged by
worms later.
George W. Croft, of Aiken county,
one spring bought 500 baby chicks on
March 9, brooded them with a good
brooder on clean range, fed them
plenty of rations that asUre continu
ous. vigorous growth, and after sell
ing 189 broilers he had 169 mature
pullets ready to lay In early fall that
had cost only 47 cents apiece.
M. B. Henderson, a successful
rens county poultryman, brooded 265
baby chicks the first two weeks by
rigid adherence to the Cjemson plan
of clean range, a good house and feed
for a quick start wdth the result that
only one died.
Mrs. E. E. Roberts, of Monticello,
Fairfield county, brooded -121 ba;Eiy
chicks to three w’eeks ag^e this spring
with only one loss and the birds were
quite a bit heavier than average for
the age, using the same method. The
Clemson College poultry plant started
3,800 chicks this spring and early in
May, when they ranged from a few
days to seven w'eeks old only 6.3 per
cent had died, many of them by acci
dents. They were making rapid growth
on rations of hard-boiled eggs and
sour milk five times daily for the first
week, after which was added to their
menu, a mash of 20 pounds of yellow
corn, 20 pounds of wheat middlings,
20 pounds of wheat bran, five pounds
of meat scrap, five pounds of bone
meal and three-fourths of a pound of
salt. Equal parts of the mash and
cracked yellow corn are mixed and
kept in clean troughs before the chicks
all the time, for the more they eat,
the faster they growl
