The Force of Intellect. ^
More and more sheer brain power
is conrinjf into its own as opposed to
brute strength. The World has known
times when physicical force dominated
both man and beast. Those days are
jrtme. Now everything is ruled by
thoughts in the minds of men..
And this Age of Intellect is having
unexpected results. The old-time
prize-fighter, and many other old-
time exponents of various sports, had
only strength. The prize-fighter with
the largest biceps, longest reach,
v steadiest legs and the best punch was
the ylol of the populanee. Now a prize
tiffhter is expected to have some busi
ness sagacity, and a good scientific
knowledge of the fistic game. In ad
dition, we have come to expect our
prize-fighters to know a little, even
more than a little, about things which
belong in the realm of art.
Witness the coming to this country
of Italy’s champion, Umberto Torri-
euni. Not half as much fuss is being
made about Umberto’s muscles as is
being; made about his classical edu
ction. Umberto is proud of l>eing a
ileefi student of Sh&kespear, Homer,
the entire .range of classic litera
ture.
*)ur own Gene Tunney—whom Um
berto would like to meet both in the
ring and as an opponent in an intel
ligence test—knows riot only the art
of the uppercut hut has been a good
trader all of his life and only a few
weeks ago addressed an audience of
college students on te subject of
Shakespeare. And he made some
p etty wise remarks about the Bard of
Avon, too.-, * *‘1 , **$H
In all sport? and in many other lines
of activity, the participants today have
more in their craniums than a cynic
would expect. This is ap age where
brain-power dominates!
