News of Blackville
Blackville, Feb. 4. — Mesdames
Banks, Woodward, McNab and Lemon
came over from Barnwell Wednes
day afternoon and met with the ladies
of the Methodist church here to organ
ize a Missinjmry socieity. The follow
ing officers were elected: Mrs. A. H.
Ninestein, president; Mrs. C. S. Mar
tin, vice-president; Mrs. W. W. Mol-
ony, secretary and treasurer. ^
The many friepds of the Rev. R
W. Humphries re^rot to learn that
he has lost his eyesight, caused from
influenza effecting the optic nerve.
Rev. Humphries was the pastor tf
the Methodist church here and was
well loved by all of his friends.
Mrs. E. C. Johnson and son. John

L. Buist, motored to Savannah on
Monday morning.
The children and many grownups,
of Blackville thoroughly enjoyed the
visit of two aetroplams on Monday and
Tuesday. Passengers were carried for
a ride to the delight of those who
didn’t have the .nerve to go them
selves. Some stunt riding was also
a novelty.
Mrs. Seymour Ross has been suffer
ing from a bad case of influenza and
friends are glad to loam that she is
improving.
Mrs.* Jack Alston, (fT Augusta, is
here with her sister, Mrs. D. P. Walsh,
who returned Sunday from the hos
pital in Columbia whare she had been
for the pas{. two weeks.
W. W. Morrison has returned to
Savannah for treathieni ifr a hospital.
Friends are glad to know that he is
improving. ’
Miss Rosa Davis, of Charlestson, is

On Thursday afternoon at the
home of Mrs. B. H. Duncan Miss Alva
Baxley delightfully entertained a
number of friends, the occasion being
tHe organization of a new Book club.
'Fourteen original members were pres
ent an (L4,en-others were voted upon to
make up the quota of twenty-four.
The club was named the “Tea and
Topic” club and will meet on the last
Friday of each month. Miss Alva
Baxley was elected president, ' M v S3l
Sigsby Grimes, vice-president, and
Mrs. A. V. Coflum, secretary > and
treasurer. A Tea Contest was greit-
ly enjoyeijd followed by a salad course

The Wednesday . Afternoon Book
club met on Thursday at the home of
Mrs. C. S. Buist. Mrs. B. B. Kammer
read a very interesting paper on the
life of James Lane Allen with an ex-^
tract from his book, The Choir Invisi
ble. No business of any importance
was brought before the meeting. A
sweot course was enjoyed.
Mrs. H. Brown and sister, Mrs. B.
D. Beeorwald, of Philadelphia, and
Mrs. J. Brown and daughter, Mrs.
Earnest Weatherhorn, of Charleston,
were delightfully entertained on Wed
nesday at a lovely luncheon in Au
gusta. * 1
Dr. Morris Ri?h’, of Orangeburg,
was a-visitor in town yesterday even-
ing.
Miss. Eva Rich, of Columbia, spent
Sunday with her mother, Mrs. Reka
Rich. Mr. and Mrs. B. D. Beeorwald,
of Philadelphia, and Mrs. Annie
Levy, of Augusta, accompanied by
Mrs. H. Brown, motored to Charles

tion. The object of the tour is to gain

cultural standpoint and in addition to
reap the advantage of recreation.
After lunch at a restaurant the^
party was given a talk by Otis Brab-*
ham, who set forth the advantages
this section of the country offered to
farmers and to investors in manufac
turing enterprises.
