rectory of the Barnwell Episcopal
Church by fire yesterday (Wednesday^
afternoon about four o’clock.

Henry Sandifer, who holds a re
sponsible position with a contracting
company doing paving at Williston,
was a visitor in the city this week.

the bridge tournament, which is the
first of a series to be held during the
fall and winter months, the proceeds
being for a church painting fund.
Miss Elizabeth McNab, home dem
onstration agen^, left for Rock Hill
on Monday, the 5th inst., where she
goes to attend the agents’ conference.
She will return on the 16th inst., af
ter which time she will be on furlough
until January 1st.
Mr. and Mrs. George Weathersbee
spent last Sunday in Augusta, where
they went to visit Mrs. Weathersbee’s
father, J. D. Garrison, who was able
to return home yesterday (Wednes
day) much improved in health to the
delight of his many friends.
Capt. G. M. Main received a phone
message early Wednesday morning
telling of the death of his aunt, Mrs.
Jane Brant, widow of the late G. M.
Brant, of the Jenny section. Mrs.
Brant was a most remarkable woman,
having reached the ripe old age of

BRIDGE TOURNAMENT
GREATLY ENJOYED.
An outstanding social event of the
fall season was the benefit bridge
party given Wednesday evening of
last week by the Ladies’ Guild of the
Barnwell Episcopal church at the
home of Mrs. George Batten, a resi
dent of New York city who, with her,
daughter, Miss Emmaline Batten* is
spending the winter in Barnwell.
Fourteen tables were arranged for
bridge in the dining room, living room
and hdll, which were abloom with fall
o \
roses. After y six rounds had been
enjoyed, it was found that the high
score prize for ladies, a corsage of
sweet peas, was won by Miss Annie
Mabry, and the high score prize for
men, a linen handkerchief, went to
Mr. S. V. Brown. The low score prize
for ladies, a bouquet of hand made
wool flowers, was awarded to Mrs.
S. V. Brown, while Mr. R. S Dicks re
ceived low score prize for men, box of
talcum powder. Quite a bit of amuse
ment was occasioned with the award

were a box of cigarettes for the ladies
and a beautiful dress doll for the
men. These prizes went to Mrs. S. B.
Moseley and Mr. B. S. Moore, Jr., re

Blaikville, Dec. 6.—Mrs. Rebecca
Williams Gyles; widow of the late
William Alfred Gyles , died at her
home here this morning at 11 o’clock
She was one of Blackville’s oldest
citizens, having lived here since her
birth, January 24, 1S43, her age being
nearly eighty-five. Mrs. Gyles’ ill
ness was brief. She became sick
Monday night, but during the day
she had attended to her home duties
and had eaten heartily. Mrs. Gyles
had been married for fifty-nine years
to Alfred Gyles when he died only
three years ago. §he has surviving
her two children, Mrs. Josephine
Risher and Dr. Ryan A. Gyles, of
Blackville; two grandchildren, Cleve
land Risher, of Athens, Ga., and Dr.
Ronald Gyles, of Hyler, Ky.; also five
great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gyles was
» member of the Blackville Baptist
Church and. was one of its oldest
members. Thu funeral will be con
ducted to-morrow afternoon at the
Blackville cemetery, with the Rev
B. H. Duncan officiating.

the Vamp Theatre on the evening of

tajent which it possesses. At a later
date the Bamberg Choral Club will
give a sacred concert at the Barnwell
Methodist Church and it is also an
nounced that Miss Lott, music in

give an organ recital at the local

twenty members of the Jennie Bates
Hagood Bible class of the Methodist
Church met in front of the court house
at 3:00 o’clock, where cars were wait
ing to convey them to the home
of Mrs. J. Morgan Weathers
bee* who lives in the Pleas
ant Hill section of the county where a
moat enthusiastic and enjoyable meetr
ing of the class was held.
