I. Isaiah's Message to Ahaz.
1. Prophecy concerning Immanuel
(eh. 7).
The occasion of this prophecy was
an invasion from the north by Israel
and Syria. This invasion greatly
alarmed Ahaz.- To calm his fearful
heart Isaiah assured him that God's
purpose concerning the nation would
not fail. He urged the exercise of
faith in God, offering to confirm his
faith by working any miracle desired.
While with false humility he refused
a sign the prophet announced the giv
ing of a sign which would be the birth
of Immanuel.
2. A promise of divine protection
(ch. 81). /

II. Judah Jnvadsd by the Assyr

1. Habshakeh meets a deputation
from Judah (vv. 1-21).
He represented Sennacherib, the
king of Assyria, whose mission was
to Induce Judab to surrender. His
method to accomplish this was:
(1) Intimidation (vv. 4-0).
He tried to bully them into submis
sion.
(2) Misrepresentation (v. 10).
He asserted that It was useless for
them to put their trust In God and
even declared that the Lord bad sent
kdm to destroy Egypt.
(S) He tried to creats a panic
among the people (vv. 13-21). Fear
ing such a panic the deputation of tits
Jew* urged Rabaiiakeh not to speak
in the Jewa' language.
(4) He promised them plenty In an
other land (vv. 16. 17).
2. The v report to Hesekiah by the
deputation (v. 22). They rent their
garments In fear and dismay over
tlielr perilous condition, for the crisis
long before predicted by Isalab had
now come upon them.
III. Haieklah’s Behavior (Isa. 37).
1. Retorted to the House of the
Lord (v. 1).
This la a sure retreat for God'a peo

3. Hezekiah's prayer (vv. 14-20).
Itabshakeh, who seems to have with
drawn from Jerusalem for a little
while, now returned from Sennacherib
with a letter warning Hezekiah against
trusting God for deliverance, for no
God was able to stand against the
Assyrian army. He spread the letter
before the Lord and prayed.
(1) He recognized God’s throne,
making it the ground of his plea
(v. 16). *
He reposed his faith in the lord
ship of Jehovah, knowing that ail
power and authority resided in Him.
__J2^He recognized the peril which
threatened the people (vv. 17-19). 1
(3) He asked for deliverance (v. 20).
4. Isaiah’s message to Hezekiah
(vv. 21-3".).
(1) That Sennacherib’s sin was
blasphemy against the Holy One of
Israel (vv. 21-23).
(2) That Sennacherib had forgotten
that he was an instrument in God a
hand (vv. 24-28).
(3) That Judgment upon Sennach

• Fur Seals All Rilled.
The species which lived on Guada
lupe was akin to- these last and not
to tlie Alaskan forms, all hough the
furs \Tere almost equally valuable and
brought good profits to the hunters.
Guadalupe being such a distant out
post of Mexico, it is doubtful If a
single official of that government had
the faintest conception of the war of
extermination at the time it wa? tak
ing place. • . , ,
So • far ns the available records
show, the last living fur seal was
seen on Guadalupe in 1892;' Since
then several expeditions have gone to
the island and searched for the an
imal without success.
Former fur-seal rookeries have been
examined with .scrupulous care, the
areas measured and the number ol
animals which once hauled out there
to rear their young computed.
• "‘South ’Rookery originally contained
at least 50.000 fur seals and compared
favorably with the major breeding
grounds of the Pribilof islands today*
The entire Guadalupe herd must have
numbered at least 100,000 animals
when it was In its prime.
Without printed records, how do
we know this, thirty years after the
last of the animals died? They left
their own records, which can he read
almost as plainly today as if each an
imal were in its place; and this makes
the reallzntiou of the facts all (he
more bitter.
The animals chose the roughest and
most rocky shore* for tlielr land
homes and congregated in large, com
pact rookeries, In conformance to the
habit of fur seals generally. The con
slant trampling of thousands upon
thousands of flippers over the hard
blocks and bdwidera of lava rock wore
them down to the smoothness of pol
ished marble. And there they ar« to-

dike systems, caverns, lava hubbies,
and vents to gain an Idea of the tre
mendous dynamic forces which were
once at work here.
The first naturalist to visit Gupd-
alupe was Dr. Edward Paltper, yly
1875. He camped In one of the cy
press groves and described the place
as a paradise. There were a great
many lienutlful shrubs and flowering
plants in the moisture belt, and the
birds were so abundant and so tame
that he called It an Isle of dreams.

Devastated by Goats. , .
But conditions are vqstly changed
now. Guadalupe is a biological
sepulcher.
The shrubs and flowering plants
have been practically exterminated
and for thirty years no young trees
have had a chance to grow. Fortu
nately. specimens of th^-pines. palms,
and cypresses have been brought to
California and planted In some of the
parks v The oaks, which apparently

the largest acorns in existence, belnR
fully two Inches In diameter.
The old trees are fast disappearing
through natural death and the ef
fects of storms. Four of the fine spe
cies of birds have become extinct and
the others, are reduced to a fraction
of their former number.
The cause of all this death and de
struction was the ambition of some
one to start a. goat ranch on Guada
lupe many years ago. The animals,
without care, thrived beyond the wil/1
est expectations of‘the promoters, hut
tlie venture proved a failure flnan-
dally. f
The goats have learned to quench
their thirst with sea water and have
